Concrete Blonde

Happy Blackhawks day, Chicago! We did it! After 49 long years, Lord Stanley’s Cup returns to the windy city!

If you’re not already hammered at downtown celebration, there’s plenty of great music this weekend to keep the party going including Concrete Blonde at the Vic, YAWN at the Hideout, The Futureheads at Lincoln Hall, Metronome Celebration, Earth Program and at Bottom Lounge and so much more.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

West Fest is back for 2010. The annual street festival that takes place on Chicago Ave. between Damen and Wood will be held on July 10 – 11.

Once again the mighty West Fest will not only be host to many wonderful bands (more on that later), but will also feature local restaurants selling their goods, a Kid Fest for all the hipster’s little ones, and – it being Chicago Ave. – Pet Fest as well.

As for the music, Empty Bottle Presents is doing the heavy lifting and a partial line-up has leaked out. Previous years have had some pretty rad bands including Urge Overkill, Red Red Meat, Meat Puppets, Local H, and the Ponys. So far, this year’s main stage includes site favorites and fellow Chicagoans YAWN, Toronto’s fucked up Fucked Up, Brooklyn’s Small Black, and Scotland’s We Were Promised Jetpacks. Not a bad partial list.

Last week, we posted a link to a live radio performance from YAWN during which the band debuted some new tracks from their upcoming record due out sometimes this summer.

Well, today the Chicago pysch-pop quartet have released a brand new remix EP as a free download on their website to tide all you hungry YAWN-ers over until their new material sees the light of day.

The EP features Chicago native Alex Baez, who also mastered the EP, putting his own spin on YAWN tracks “Kind of Guy” and providing an incredible intro track. Additionally, Germany’s GROOVEHAHN remixes “Midnite” and “Toys”, Chicago’s Paul Butter tackles “Empress” and much more.

Download the entire EP right here. See the complete track list, and a super-slick video of the aforementioned incredible intro track from Alex Baez after the jump.

Chicago pysch-pop outfit YAWN has come a long way since I reviewed their latest EP back in January.

The band traveled to Austin to perform a showcase at the Levi’s Fader Fort for SXSW, opened for Brooklyn indie darlings Yeasayer in St. Louis and even made it into the hollowed bandwidth of Pitchfork.com.

So, it comes as no surprise than YAWN is working on a follow-up to their slim but impressive four-track EP. Well, for those of you who simply must hear new YAWN right now, then check out the band’s live performance on Break Thru Radio that they recorded while recently on a tour date up in New York City. YAWN are still recording the follow-up to their last EP according to a brief interview segment from the radio show with no firm release date as of yet.

(Also, thanks to the station DJ who straight up quotes the opening line of my review at the top of the segment!)

cover-artYAWN may very well be Chicago’s answer to Sigur Ros or Animal Collective. On their latest release, E.P, the group’s computerized blips, swirling vocals and bombastic drum loops often walk the line between danceable and hypnotic thanks to an extremely sleek production. And while YAWN seem to revel in creating lush soundscapes and exotic interludes, their songs offer a precise focus that often gets lost in the electro-dance-loop genre.
