Anti Records posted a video of Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy discussing the production of Staples’ new album You Are Not Alone which Tweedy produced. Staples explains the history of some of the traditional songs selected for the album as well as how the title track, composed by Tweedy, came to be crafted in the studio. Filmed in the Wilco loft studio the clip has a few interjections of the pair performing tunes from the album, with Tweedy on acoustic guitar. You Are Not Alone is available Sept. 14. And be sure to catch Mavis Staples on the Budweiser stage at 2 p.m. this Friday, August 6, at Lollapalooza!
Wilco appears to be parting ways with Nonsuch Records with plans to possibly start its own record label. Paste Magazine picked up on an interview Nels Cline gave to Washington D.C. based Express Night Out where the guitarist gave few details about the band’s label future.
According to the interview with Cline and a followup by Paste with Wilco’s publicist, Deb Bernadini, the contract with Nonesuch will not be renewed and the possibility of Jeffy Tweedy and Co. starting their own label is very real.
Cline and the rest of Wilco will be in the studio in August and October recording their new album for their supposedly new label.
File this one under WTF?: This past march, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy played his semi-annual solo acoustic benefit shows at Chicago’s Vic Theatre. Well today, Pitchfork.com posted a months-old video from the show featuring Tweedy covering the Beyoncé hit “Single Ladies“. The video begins with Tweedy reading his pre-show fan requests, which get written down before the show, usually by those in line to get in. The request on this particular day was either Wilco-staple “Ashes Of American Flags” or dance-club anthem “Single Ladies”. If you know anything about Tweedy, you can guess which song he decided to perform. So, sit back, and enjoy this this Tweedy-transformation of “Single Ladies” into an acoustic number/poetry reading:

Time Out Chicago reported yesterday that Chicago post-rockers Tortoise joined magical freak-of-nature Beck in his Los Angeles studio for his Record Club project.
Beck’s Record Club project is a relaxed studio session where Beck and his coolest rock star friends get together to re-record classic albums.

Austin, originally from Chicago, and Bayliss, who resides in the city, got together a couple of years ago as each was going through a divorce.
On Saturday, May 25 they played Portland, Oregon’s Berbati’s Pan and keeping the Chicago vibe heavy they played a killer version of Wilco’s “Handshake Drugs” from A Ghost is Born which was taped and shared by Mark Burgin. Enjoy:
