Hey, look who’s back? Loveable glam poppers The Maybenauts have reunited with former singer Leilani Frey to release a new single called 2012.
The apocalyptic pop jam, which name checks societal ills like teenage pregnancy and Sarah Palin, features a lot of heavy guitar and bass riffage (courtesy of a panda mask-less Vee Sonnets and Ellie Maybe, respectively) and thundering drum beats, courtesy of guest drummer Fred Frey.
The song is not new to those who caught The Maybenauts during their Big Bang era (2010), but the newly recorded verison is raw and filled with vitality. Bring on, Maybenauts 3.0!
Can you believe it’s Friday? I mean, the week practically started only a few days ago. In any event, this weekend is just as packed, if not more so, than it was last weekend. The only difference? It’s going to be hot! Break out those short shorts and sunglasses, Chicago, because it’s going to get all sweaty up in here.
Without further ado, we present our picks for this weekend’s sexiest shows. Be there and/or be square. Ya dig?
The three adorable glitz girls and the space panda from The Maybenauts are back with a new song and a lovely new lead singer, Dixie Jacobs.
These glam poppers seem to be heavy on the move with new music, new shows and quite possibly a new album out soon (please!). For now, we have “Here Today” to suffice our Maybenaut-cravings.
This little ditty is filled with wistful lyrics, lush harmonies and those strong, groovy Maybenauts bass lines. A sort of nod to the 90′s garage rock ballad, the song pulls elements from bands like Veruca Salt and Belly. Jacobs is a very welcome addition with her husky, powerful vocals pulling out the passionate side of the band. Of course, you all can just hear it for yourself right here:
March is finally here. You know what that means? Spring is in the air, snow is melting on the ground and pedestrians are spraining their ankles in newly formed potholes. Anyway, let’s get on with our picks for this weekend’s top shows, shall we…
Seeing how our staff has distinct tastes and opinions on music, it would be nearly impossible for us to determine a 10 Albums of 2010 list as a single entity without excessive bloodshed. Therefore in the next two weeks, we’ll be posting multiple Top 10 Albums of 2010 lists as determined by Loud Loop Press editors and contributors. Today, Associate Editor Audrey Leon takes us to school with her list for Top 10 Albums of 2010.
“Take Five” is a new interview series that will focus on Chicago’s ever-growing music scene by giving you insight on the city’s best local acts via the best source possible: the acts themselves. We ask five questions, and they give five answers. Here is the second installment featuring The Maybenauts.
Chicago glam rockers The Maybenauts have only been around 21 months, but from the look of their stage presence and sound of well-crafted pop songs on their debut EP, you would never know this to be true. Singer Leilani Frey, bassist Ellie Maybe, guitarist Vee Sonnets and drummer Emily Agustin write well, look well and rock well together. We recently chatted up Maybenauts bassist Ellie Maybe about the band’s foray into making music videos and their involvement with the Jane Wiedlin-approved charity Bowling for Boobies.
