hideout-patch2Three stomach rumbling reasons to head on over to The Hideout this evening…

1. It’s Wednesday. That means tonight is Soup and Bread night. Chefs tonight include Swim Cafe, Celeste Dolan, Shana Pearlmutter, Zachary Kaplan, Rae Hill, and Martha Bayne. Soup, as always, is free but donations are more than welcome. All proceeds benefit local food pantries. All soup benefits your well-being.

bs161_sygc_cover-300As mentioned in an earlier update, the scheduled Scotland Yard Gospel Choir Halloween show at the Subterranean will now be a benefit for the band’s mounting medical expenses.

Additionally, The Hideout has just announced that they will also host a benefit for the band featuring the 1900′s and Brighton MA on Nov 12th. Tickets are $12 with all of the proceeds going directly to the band.

Finally, check out Greg Kot’s nice piece on the slow, but fortunately steady, recovery of the band members. Don’t forget that you can also donate through Bloodshot Records Paypal account as well. Keep your eyes on loudlooppress.com for a full review of Scotland Yard’s new record in what will hopefully be a slight return to normalcy.

Last winter, The Hideout hosted a weekly gathering revolving around hot soup and some day old bread called, coincidentally, Soup and Bread. The premise was simple: local musicians, artists, Hideout employees, etc. make and donate every soup a week.

Then folks like you and me would head out in the dead of winter to eat said soup, have a drink or 3, and maintain human contact to spite the gods.

Through donations at these gatherings, The Hideout made over $2700 in 2008, which was donated to Greater Chicago Food Depository. Now with your help, soup and bread dinner organizer Martha Bayne is teaming with former Chicago Reader art director Sheila Sachs to put out a cookbook featuring last year’s soups.

BILLY TALENT II Howdy all! It’s been a crazy week, but we survived…did you? Anyway, we have some major plans ahead for Loud Loop Press so stay tuned!

We’ll be ramping up our efforts in the next fews weeks to become your number one resource for all things Chicago music. But before we kick off Weekend Diversions this week, here’s our writer Andy Kondrat giving his review of Wednesday night’s Billy Talent show at the Metro. Take it away, Andy!

Openers AM Taxi were harmless. To enjoy headliners Billy Talent, you had to be either thirteen, or really, really drunk. Unfortunately, I was double one and half the other.

Yes. Now back to your regularly scheduled program….

New Radiant Storm King

I have not heard much about New Radiant Storm King since they were once upon a time often compared to Dinosaur Jr. Seems they are still kicking around and are opening for Chicago’s Ceiling Stars at the Darkroom tonight. Check it out and see if NRSK is still up for making a racket.- Ross Meyerson

9:00 PM. Friday, 9/18. Darkroom. $10.

The Fall Tribute

There’s something pretty cool happening at the Hideout on Saturday night. The Thin Man, Grimble Grumble, Plastic Crimewave Sound, Bleary, and the Blasted Diplomats are all playing tunes by The Fall in what some call a tribute. In addition to the music, the Hideout will also be a raffling off posters by Bob Hatzell and photos by Jim Newberry for the benefit of friend of the site Lawrence Peter’s busted and uninsured heel. So not only do you get to hear bands interpret the songs of the Fall but you get to help out probably one of the sweetest gents you’ll ever meet. – Ross Meyerson

9:00 PM. Saturday, 9/19. The Hideout. $8.

Black Wyrm Seed

As always the weekend means some boss free music at my favorite independent music shop, Permanent Records. This Saturday evening they take a break from the lo-fi garage of the last few weeks as Chicago’s Black Wyrm Seed bring their stoney psychedelic space jams to Chicago Ave. What’s more, another Chicagoland band, Mako Sica, are opening in support of their soon to be released album not so coincidentally on Permanent Records own label. If you have not checked out a Permanent in-store you’ve been missing out on a ton of great under the radar bands, change that this week.- Ross Meyerson

6:00 PM. Saturday, 9/19. Permanent Records. FREE!.

If you’re a fan of The Hideout’s annual end-of-summer blowout block party, then the following news might leave you with mixed emotions.

This year’s block party will be devoted entirely to the 15th Anniversary of Chicago’s Bloodshot Records and is titled the Bloodshot Beer-B-Q. The good news is that the event will still take place outside the music club on West Wabansia starting at noon on Sept. 12.

The lineup from Jim DeRo’s Sun-Times blog is as follows:

Alejandro Escovedo, the Waco Brothers with Rico Bell, Bobby Bare Jr., Deadstring Brothers, the reunited Blacks, the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Scott H. Biram and a reunion by Moonshine Willy, playing one show only after a decade-long break.

According to bloodshotrecords.com, a $10 donation is required for admission and will benefit Rock For Kids and 826 Chicago. The event is also ALL AGES. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.

Local psych/krautrock/what-have-you-band CAVE have a new full length album coming out May 26 on Important Records.

After releasing a split 10″ with the California Raisins and a 7″ featuring Bobby Conn earlier this year, it will be a pleasure to hear more than 5 or 10 minutes of new material in one sitting.

If you missed their record release show at The Hideout on the 14th looks like you’ll have to wait until June 12 at Automatic Space to hear the new tunes live as they are heading out west until then.
