Mutts

And now here are three a-win-is-a-win reasons to pogo on over to the Empty Bottle this evening for three great local bands…

1. Ever wondered what Queens Of The Stone Age would sound like if they ditched the guitars and started playing some dirty sounding organs? We may never know the answer to that, but we’re pretty sure Chicago’s Mutts get damn close. There’s not a guitar in site for this gritty three piece. They have vocals, keys, bass and drums and nothing more, but their organ tone is so beefy and menacing that you won’t even notice an axe is missing (Check the track “Beggar” form their Myspace). Add to that front man Mike Maimone’s bluesy, frantic vocal delivery, Mutts are seemingly a group on the rise in the windy city.

Distractions

Three I’m-going-to-try-to-do-this-without-mentioning-that-Bears-game reasons to wash your hair hippie and head over to the Empty Bottle tonight…

1. Chicago’s dreamy popsters Distractions have a fairly new’ish tape out on Plustapes that you might be able to snatch up tonight. If not, you can just watch them play their 60′s psych pop meets Beat Happening meets whatever else floats their boat brand of musical stylings.

Three so-top-secret-that-if-I-told-you-I-just-might-have-to-kill-you reasons to drop everything and head on over to the Empty Bottle tonight…

1. Nashville’s JEFF The Brotherhood have made an appearance on the big Daily Diversion show before, but aint no reason we can’t spotlight their sweet maybe we’ll call it flanged out grunge pop again. I mean, they’ve come up from Nashville to play for y’all so the least we can do is tell you they are rad and that you should go check them out. Am I right or am I right?

Vacations

Three the systematic-dismantling-of-the-Hawks-continues-to-the-delight-of-this-here-Sharks-fan (Editor’s note: Pffffft.) reasons to pack a sack lunch and head over to the Empty Bottle this very night…

1. Let’s not get into the Joan of Arc family tree discussion. Let’s just look at the bands playing tonight and discuss. Firstly, Vacations. They are an attempt at a guitar free world. Not that there aren’t stringed instruments for that’s a mandolin for sure. Vacations come across as the more dour sounding version of today’s modern ecstatic indie rock. I’m more of a dour fan anyways.

Chicago noisy lo-fi, new wave outfit Black Math have released a new video for their track “Part Of Me”. The Brandon Weatherbee-directed clip appears to be an old black and white western film projected on a sheet. That is, before the entire thing goes up in flames. A simple yet intriguing concept for a rambunctious, chug-a-long tune filled with reverb-laden vocals. Be sure to catch Black Math when they set the Empty Bottle aflame on Wednesday, August 11. Now, check out the video below:

Sadhu Sadhu | Photo by Meng Yang

Three taking-two-out-of-three-from-the-White-Sox-feels-good-especially-because-I-know-Hawk-Harrelson-is-sad reasons to clean behind your ears and head over to the Empty Bottle tonight…

1. Chicago’s Sadhu Sadhu have been on my radar for quite some time now. I’ve championed them since I first heard their “Live At The Hideout” CD-R. I might have had some swell things to say about it, too. Well guess what? I’ve never actually seen them live. Shhh. I know. Tonight’s the night, so if you dig trippy rocking psychedelic shit, you should join me. I’ll be the guy with graying hair coughing in the back.

You may remember way back in our infancy we here at LoudLoopPress.com championed a show by Chicago’s own La Scala. Ah, November. We were so young then but not naive. La Scala had been a bit on and off at that point, and unfortunately went a little off again afterward, but with good reason.

That reason? To record. So fear not Chicago, as La Scala are definitely “on” these days and their debut full length The Last Carousel is about to hit the streets running.
