California Wives

Well, if you couldn’t tell by stepping outside this morning, Summer is ending and Fall is near. It’s practically chilly in the shade! Still, Chicago’s festival season and outdoor performances roll on. Of course there’s the North Coast Music Festival set to take over Union Park this weekend. Be sure to check out our North Coast Music Festival Preview before heading out there this afternoon. Also set for this weekend is the Joyous Outdoor Event with music curated by the Metro and featuring My Gold Mask, Scotland Yard Gospel Choir and more.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This weekend, we’re highlighting Chicago’s own California Wives at Schubas, Bitchin Bajas at the Hideout, Bash On Wabash and so much more!

Let’s get to it, shall we?

A few weeks back, we tipped you off to some new My Gold Mask material in the form of a rough mix titled “Bobbi”. Now, we have a little more information on the new My Gold Mask release on which the song will appear.

It would be a surprise if Chicago’s own California Wives are still unsigned in the near future. Coming off of an impressive set at the Wicker Park festival this summer, the band’s new five song EP, Affair, is subtle yet catchy. It’s the kind of EP you listen to eight times in a row, not for a specific song, or a particular verse. It’s because all five songs are just well done.

Chicago indie-pop outfit Unicycle Loves You have a brand new album out next month titled Mirror, Mirror, and ahead of its release, we have a new video for the record’s title track. The “Mirror, Mirror” clip features a crazy love triangle between a horny horned-monster, his ex-girlfriend and her new lover. After the monster gets some plastic surgery, things get really interesting when he tries to reconcile with his ex. I won’t spoil it for you, but it’s a bit surreal how the song’s jangly guitar pop fits as a soundtrack. Anyway, be sure and catch Unicycle Loves You on Saturday, September 11, at Schubas for their record release show. Now enjoy the vid:

Lollapalooza is back and bigger than ever with an eclectic set of headliners that ranges from the post-Madonna, dancehall pop of Lady Gaga to reunited Seattle grungers Soundgarden to the unbridled anthems of indie rock saviors Arcade Fire. But of course, you probably are familiar with those groups. So, we decided on keying you in on some of our favorites who play the other eight hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Get ready, Chicago. Here’s your Loud Loop Press Lollapalooza 2010 preview…

Chicago’s California Wives are going to have a busy finish to this summer.

The synth-pop, new wave group are set to release a brand new EP, titled Affair, on September 3. For those who are impatient, good news. We’ve got the EP’s first single, “Blood Red Youth”, for stream and to download for free right here: Blood Red Youth.

The seemingly Phoenix-inspired track opens with some tight hi-hat work as well as a deep, throbbing bassline before shifting to some much more melodic synth action countered by dancey guitars. “Blood Red Youth” should be a great end-of-summer tune that will go off well live as it’s easy on the ears as well as a body-mover. And if you want to hear it live, you’re in luck! The band has three shows planned in Chicago in the next two months.
