AN AESTHETIC ANASTHETIC As much as I dug AAA's release, Before the Machinery of Other Skeletons, their most recent release, NAMES, tops it because of it’s mix of brutal riffs and humor that mostly comes from the album art and song titles. I mean, the titles speak for themselves with “Billy Rape Cyrus,” and “Randy Quaidludes,” but the music is serious business as proven with the mammoth climaxes and gut-punching riffs – all of which are crystal clear thanks to the impressive board-work of Sanford Parker. TUESDAY

HEALTH&BEAUTY One thing that will never change about Health&Beauty is mastermind Brian Sulpizio's commitment to making great music. The local mostly folk/sometimes electric eclectic rockers released the dreamy acoustic album GUNS in February, which features many reasons to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride ahead. And if you haven't, place Health&Beauty's cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" on the very top of your playlist. PEOPLES TEMPLE OF AMERICA Peoples Temple of America aren’t flashy. In fact, they may be the opposite of flashy. But what’s most engaging about their music is that raw minimalism that’s driven by a punk rock edge. The indie rock trio’s steady, watery guitars are the perfect foil for lead singer Ben Leach’s urgent delivery that will undoubtedly catch be attention of Japandroids and Titus Andronicus fans. JEREMY DAVID MILLER Jeremy David Miller may be better known as one of five parts of Chicago rock outfit Rambos, but Miller is an artist in his own right, unleashing the equally theatric (compared to Rambos) acoustic folk/country album Lepus in late 2011. Miller exhibits a cheeky sense of humor through all his strong observations (ex: "One Million Graves (For One Pretty Dame" and "All I Want to Do Is Dance"). CHICAGO, I LOVE YOU FESTIVAL KICKOFF

Buzzing all over our radar screens are the 10th Annual CHIRP Record Fair, Distractions/Distortions Fest, a free show by JC BROOKS & The Uptown Sound plus so much more. FRIDAY

DASTARDLY It's rock and roll happy hour over at Reggie's with our favorite folkers Dastardly. This band of misfits will blast their rambunctiously playful tales of woe and whoa over the speakers for a good old fashioned hoedown. Please note that this is an early show. Reggie's Music Joint. 21+ ::distractions:: ::distortions:: The third annual ::distractions:: ::distortions:: fest kicks off two days of solid Chicago made music and visual arts at Multi Kulti this weekend. Milwaukee Ave.) 21+ $5 AN AESTHETIC ANAESTHETIC Have to admit I was quite impressed with last year's Before the Machinery of Other Skeletons from local post-rockers An Aesthetic Anaesthetic. It was chock full of raw, crunchy riffs, chugging bass and bombastic rhythms - but they were clever enough to keep it squarely on the rock end of the spectrum instead of giving into their heavy metal tendencies as they always manage to work in some intriguing melodies. So, when the news hit that they were recording their next release, NAMES, with famed Chicago producer Sanford Parker...well that's just going to be awesome. Get there early as these guys are playing first in front of a rad bill featuring prog-rockers Blane Fonda and buzzing art rock duo Mr. Gnome. (Richard Giraldi) 10:00 p.m. Friday, 4/13. CHIRP RECORD FAIR It's baaaack! Yep, it's that time of year when Chi-town vinyl lovers descend upon the Chicago Journeymen Plumber's Union in the West Loop. Additionally, there will be refreshments (Beer!) and entertainment from the Numero Group, DJs and even some trivia. Good thing you got that tax refund already, right? Three - chillaxing is not a crime, but using that word in a sentence is - reasons to head on over to the Burlington tonight... 1. Chicago trio Close Hits make a tasty pot of musical gumbo. The group throw in a dash of bouncy rockabilly with some swinging psychedelic guitar solos and a few brash and sassy pop-punk overtones. Singer and guitarist Dan Rico even brings out his inner Chrissie Hynde on a very Pretenders-style track "Get to You." Whatever your flavor of choice, Close Hits brings enough rhythm and soul to rouse you from your winter blues. LISTEN: Get to You." 2. Fellow Chicagoans Rambos are the perfect complement to the upbeat stylings of Close Hits. Rambos' dark and smoky rockabilly, which is infused with surf and bluesy punk rock, is either the soundtrack to an flawlessly choreographed knife fight or the best dance off ever. There's no excuse for not twisting and shouting along to the chorus of "Terrorize." 3. No third band tonight, but check out Rambos performing "Human Monster" live at the Windy City Winter Ball this past February. 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, 1/4. The Burlington. 21+ $5. 1. Oh, it's gonna be a rocking one at Panchos. Firstly, Rambos will enthrall you with their sleek, drunken swagger. Sometimes they choose a slow burn to get their we're all singing at the same time message across while other times they seem to use the theme from Batman as the template. Either way, there are plenty of sea shanty sing-a-longs for y'all to, welp, sing-a-long to.
2. All the way from Texas (hi, Rick Perry) come We Were Wolves who are apparently not wolves anymore. I'm getting the feeling that beers will be drunk this night. We Were Wolves are decidedly not garage but still share that loosey goosey vibe while stumbling and bumbling their way through blues based numbers. All the while the vocals sound like a drunk guy trying to be heard above the din of a, as the kids say, rager. Oh, it'll be loud. 3. The Keepsies keep their sound underground. It is, to coin a phrase, Lo-Fi. Feel free to use it. Lo-Fi does not, however, mean inaccessible in this case. Beneath the fuzz are some pretty memorable hooks and melodies. This is much more the sound of folks who know how to write using minimalism as a tool and not as a way of covering up their lack of musicianship. Psst....our BF'sF are headlining this show. But enough of the weather report, we have a lot of music to get to. We're talking about Urge Overkill at Bottom Lounge, Tommy Stinson at Double Door and Rambos at the Whistler. Let's get to it, gang. FRIDAY URGE OVERKILL Any band that's had Neil Diamond cover one of its songs and had it end up on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack has certainly done something right, and Urge Overkill is no exception (or, perhaps, is the only instance). Yet, aside from "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" being the best song for Uma Thurman to OD to, a chance to see Urge Overkill is a chance to see Chicago alt-rock royalty, from back in the day when opening for Pearl Jam and Nirvana meant you were a step away from the big time (well, Bobcat Goldthwait opened for Nirvana, but that's another story for another day). After a long hiatus, Urge Overkill is back and ready to rock your brain, and you can wear it like a badge of honor that you saw them in their hometown. (Andy Kondrat) 9:00 p.m. Friday, 5/20. To celebrate, he's collaborating on a righteous show tonight with the fine folks of Betta (a play on the word "Better" as opposed to Beta) at the world's cleanest and brightest music venue, The Mutiny. You to can be there for the price of NOTHING. The party stars local raunchy egg rollers Magic Milk, curry-rockers Tyler Jon Tyler, pad thai power poppers The Brothers Gross and crab rangoon face melters Close Hits. CRYSTAL STILTS If you see one band with the word “crystal” in its name this week, make it Crystal Stilts. The Brooklyn garage poppers have been wowing critics (i.e. Pitchfork) and fans with their Joy Division meets 60s surf pop brand of music. Now isn’t that the weirdest description you’ve ever read? Of course it is. The band is in Chicago to promote its recent album In Love with Oblivion. Crystal Stilts pack plenty of fuzzy guitars and droning Ian Curtis-style vocals on top of swinging, hip-shaking back beat. SATURDAY ORNERY LITTLE DARLINGS' LISTENING PARTY The now-three piece rockers Ornery Little Darlings want you to listen to their brand new album Get After It. So much so that they’re throwing a nifty party at Beauty Bar. Come listen to Ornery Little Darling’s debut album and come away with free download cards. Plus there’s a hosted bar from 8-9pm. TOMMY STINSON If you're not sure who Tommy Stinson is, how about we start the diversion this way: a dude from The Replacements that's also been a member of Guns N' Roses and Soul Asylum is playing the Double Door, so you know he's got chops to spare. But Stinson is also a solo artist in his own right, having released one solo album, with another one to be released in August, so you can expect some Professional Rocking at this show. Slobberbone opens, whose song "Gimme Back My Dog" was named one of the three greatest rock and roll songs of all time by Stephen King. True story. SUNDAY CHAPERONE Close out your weekend with the head-bopping, dramatic folk-pop of Chaperone. The Chicago rockers will perform alongside the catchy pop rock stylings of Honest Engines and Elia Einhorn from Scotland Yard Gospel Choir for the Columbia College Chicago label AEMMP Records showcase. There's no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than hearing some foot-tapping jangly pop rock and searching through the vinyl bins to increase the heft of those old record collections. (Audrey Leon) 2:00 p.m. Sunday, 5/22. Saki. All Ages. Free! RAMBOS Chicago garage punks Rambos so impressed us with their super catchy track “Terrorize” that we can’t help but faun over the band. While the quintet’s name and song titles suggest a super macho and overly aggressive rock ‘n’ roll band, Rambos is more about partying and grooving than angry mosh pits.
