Hopefully, you have all managed to get through this blackest of Black Fridays without getting trampled upon for a $2 waffle maker, Chicagoans, because we’ve got an incredible line-up of musical acts setting up shop all round this fair city.
We’re talking Scott Lucas and the Married Men at Hard Rock Cafe, My Gold Mask at Empty Bottle, Tandoori Knights at Bottom Lounge and so much more.
Art rockers My Gold Mask and noise-jam enthusiasts Disappears both stopped by Daytrotter to record live sessions that surfaced this weekend on the Rock Island, Illinois-based music website.
It is hard to imagine the Chicago duo My Gold Mask any more stripped down, but Daytrotter managed to capture singer and drummer Gretta Rochelle and guitarist Jack Armando’s ghostly primal essence while still sounding utterly minimalist.
You can stream My Gold Mask’s entire set right now or download it for free in 128K MP3 format at Daytrotter.com.
Nothing makes you appreciate Chicago more than a free rock concert in the park, unless it’s 100 degrees. Then, you’d have to be mad to want to sit out there for three hours absorbing not only oppressive heat, but cancerous sun rays and thick humidity. If there were a pair of bands that could battle such harsh conditions it would be spooky art rockers My Gold Mask and experimental poppers Blonde Redhead, whose mix of digital samples and high-pitched, cutting vocals were enough to distract from the unbearable weather.
On this remix, the tinny guitars and barrel-deep drums of the original are replaced with 1980′s-era, Beverly Hills Cop synth lines and pulsating electro-drums. And all of a sudden “Ghost In Your Bed” is ready for a sweaty night at the club. Listen to the remix below:
Pretty cool, right? Anyway, if you want to see My Gold Mask rock out the original version of, catch’em at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 10, at Ribfest Chicago, which goes down at 4000 N Lincoln Ave.

Adios, 2010. You were a cool year. I liked when you did cool stuff like make the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup, repealed DADT and got the Reader to vote us Best Local Music Blog. You weren’t so cool when you made the Cubs crappy or made earthquakes and oil spills happen. Still not sure if you were cool for Brett Favre or Ke$ha, but it’s all good. Here’s to you, 2010.
Seeing how our staff has distinct tastes and opinions on music, it would be nearly impossible for us to determine a 10 Albums of 2010 list as a single entity without excessive bloodshed. Therefore in the next two weeks, we’ll be posting multiple Top 10 Albums of 2010 lists as determined by Loud Loop Press editors and contributors. Today, Associate Editor Audrey Leon takes us to school with her list for Top 10 Albums of 2010.
Since the M in MTV stopped standing for Music ages ago, musicians have decidedly taken to the Internet when releasing music videos. Sites such as YouTube or Vimeo have opened the doors for bands who wouldn’t have even received airplay back during MTV’s heyday to create their own music videos, which can be seen by hundreds or thousands at the click of a button.
Chicago’s massive music scene features quite a few acts that still see the music video as a prominent art form. There were literally hundreds of music videos from local bands and artists released last year. Therefore, we decided to comb through the footage and choose 10 videos that struck us visually and sonically. This is Loud Loop Press’ Top 10 Local Music Videos Of 2010…
