Three hike-up-your-long-johns-because-it's-Thursday reasons to head over to Subterranean tonight...
1. Mike Maimone, Mutts' mastermind, has been kicking around the Chicago scene for a while playing with groups such as Company of Thieves, Bailiff, Lying Delilah and Hollus - just to name a few. With all that in mind, it's almost hard to believe organ-heavy blues rockers Mutts are only celebrating the release of its first full-length (Pray for Rain) now. Anchored by Maimone's dramatic, rough and tumble vocals, Mutts cut loose on some groovy, dark and dirty jams that should be as fun to watch as they are to hear. LISTEN: "Symmetry."
2. Chicago, by way of St. Louis, alternative rockers Sleepy Kitty are America's answer to Metric. Lead singer Paige Brubeck absolutely nails Emily Haines' soft, playful vocal style. Specializing in endearingly sweet pop tunes, Sleepy Kitty encapsulates everything we love about early 90s alt-rock: a charming female lead and plenty of squealing, distorted guitars. LISTEN: "Dykula."
3. Also celebrating an album release is Chicago's own Glittermouse. The septet specializes in dreamy indie rock, but sometimes (like on its L*VE EP) Glittermouse can sound like a cross between Smashing Pumpkins and Queens of the Stone Age with a hybrid of Prince and Cedric Bixler-Zavala (ATDI/Mars Volta) on vocals. It's madness. Opening the show tonight are delightfully upbeat pop rockers Hemmingbirds.
LISTEN: Glittermouse - "Purple Blues."
WATCH: "Hemmingbirds - Mellow Gold Haze."
