Smoking Popes

Smoking Popes and Alkaline Trio were celebrating their 20th and 15th anniversaries, respectively, at the first of two sold-out shows at the Metro on Monday evening, and the bands both reflected their relative ages. While the older-brother Popes were mainly content (with notable exceptions) to forego high-octane physical performances in exchange for precision and crispness, the still-rambunctious Trio cranked up the energy, letting the band members’ adroitness on their instruments fade behind the wall of sound. However, the show delivered exactly what the fawning crowd came to see: two superior punk rock bands playing songs that are guaranteed to get you moving—or, in this case, moshing.

There’s no denying that Smoking Popes write great power-punk songs. In 20 years they haven’t lost a step when it comes to creating a live sound that, while as tight as a studio recording, boosts the adrenaline factor up a few notches. The run early in the set of “Can’t Find It,” “Grab Your Heart and Run,” and “No More Smiles” was done at a breakneck pace, yet played with care. Maybe, even, too much care. For much of the set, bassist Matt Caterer struck rockstar poses with one foot on the monitor, did windmills on the bass, and scissor-kicked at the appropriate moments, while the rest of the band rarely came even close to matching his enthusiasm.

Singer/guitarist Josh Caterer occasionally jumped up and down with his brother, but it wasn’t until set-closer “I Know You Love Me” that Josh took off the guitar and interacted with the crowd as a true lead singer, singing to the fans, and having the fans sing back. It was a honest-to-god rock and roll moment from a band that can obviously play to a crowd when it wants to.

The fantastic ending to the set reminded me of when, earlier in the set, Josh dedicated a song to the guy who had tried, unsuccessfully, to start a mosh pit the song prior. But it wasn’t that guy’s fault for not working the floor into a frenzy: the Popes sounded great and you could hear energy, but for the most part lacked the kinetic energy to match. If the band’s presence could have matched the quality of playing, Smoking Popes pick up a whole new contingent of fans that night mesmerized by a perfect set.

Alkaline Trio, however, had no problem revving up a crowd that was hungry for their particular brand of macabre punk. From the opening guitar riff of “Cringe,” it was obvious this was going to be a fast, sweaty hour and a half of music. The Trio ran through 21 songs in that time, including a five song acoustic-guitar based set that the floor still managed to find a way to mosh to (though I suppose it’s almost cheating that one of the songs was “Clavicle,” which could kick your ass even if played on a harp). Throughout the whole set, the band played hard, played fast, and played well.

But here’s something I never thought I’d say: live, a fair amount of Alkaline Trio’s technical prowess is lost. Not by sloppy playing, but instead by an emphasis on punk-rock level loudness. Guitar player Matt Skiba and bassist Dan Andriano are both incredibly talented musicians, and it was only once I realized they were lacking, did I notice that many of their songs, though barreling down the tracks like a hardcore juggernaut, depend on difficult guitar lines, constantly-moving bass parts, and the ability for the band to stop on a dime after down-stroking at 900 times a minute. The band was still doing all these things on Monday night, but the wall of sound made even noticing it a chore.

That being said, it’s impossible not to have your heart race a little faster when the Trio starts into “San Francisco” or “This Could Be Love,” and the pay-off never let you down. Except for the fact that they didn’t play “Radio.” Come on, guys. It’s “Radio.” We DID, however, get an Alkaline Trio/Smoking Popes collaboration of a cover of Violent Femmes’ “I Held Her In My Arms.” Though the song was nothing to write home about, it was great to see two local bands made good playing together on their home turf, celebrating each other’s success.

Both Smoking Popes and Alkaline Trio impressed on Monday night, and I can’t imagine fans of either band leaving disappointed. And for those of us that are fans of both bands, well, this one was pretty damn awesome. Though, side note: it was kind of creepy seeing the 10- or 11-year-old girl in the front row singing along to every single Alkaline Trio song. This ain’t Raffi, folks. In these songs, Baby Beluga ODs.

Don’t let this dreary, fickle weather ruin what is lined up to be a fantastic weekend for live music. The city is alive with the sound of wailing guitars and synths.

We’re excitedly chattering about a bevy of shows large and small, from everyone’s favorite – basement gigs – to Neon Marshmallow Fest occupying the Empty Bottle.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

FRIDAY

SOFT SPEAKER
If you’re a fan of the electric guitar, you’re a fan of Soft Speaker. The band’s latest, I’ll Tend Your Garden (reviewed by our own Ross Meyerson here), is a ferocious axe attack chock full of Neil Young-like abusive solos and chunky Dinosaur Jr.-esque riffage. Also set to rock your face tonight are Chicago’s bluesy, alt-country outfit Whisker Music and straight from New Orleans, the rootsy sounds of Jake La Botz. (Richard Giraldi)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 6/10. Cole’s. 21+. FREE!

NEON MARSHMALLOW FESTIVAL
If you saw our interview with Neon Marshmallow Fest creators Dan Smith and Matt Kimmel than you know the Chicago-based experimental music festival returns this weekend. This year’s edition is slimmed down to three days worth of eclectic rock, trance, free jazz and other not easily categorized noise-making groups. Prepare to get your minds blown within the confines of the Empty Bottle’s tiny walls with creator of the synthesizer Morton Subotnik, Chicago synth machine Beau Wanzer, and Brooklyn trancers Oneohtrix Point Never, just to name a few. Neon Marshmallow is an experience not to be missed. (Audrey Leon)

6:00 p.m. Friday, 6/10; 6:00 p.m. Saturday, 6/11; 6:00 p.m. Sunday, 6/12. Empty Bottle. 21+ $25 (single-day) & $70 (three-day passes).

>>RADIANT DEVICES<<
There are so many elements present in Radiant Devices’ music that seeing it live may be the only way to truly appreciate it. The duo, consisting of Mojdeh Stoakley and Fyodor Sakhnovski, use unusual items such as satellite dishes and propane tanks to pad its more traditional rhythm section. Stoakley uses her own spoken word over a complex mixture of jazz, ambient beats and pure hard rock. You can’t miss this. (Audrey Leon)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 6/10. The Mutiny. 21+ Free!

SATURDAY

OUTER MINDS
Chicago’s Outer Minds are perhaps the perfect garage pop band. Their Plustapes release, lovingly reviewed by Ross Meyerson, stands out with its catchy melodies in between the crunchy, reverbed guitars and eerie keyboards. If you like your music raw but with hooks that can be sing alongs, you’ll probably want to check them out. But that’s not all. I’ve already given a 350-word reason why you need to watch local psych-bluers Vee Dee in a live setting, and Mannequin Men will also be on hand rock you with their chugging indie rock as well. A three-fer for the ages. (Richard Giraldi)

9:00 p.m. Saturday, 6/11. Pancho’s. 21+ $5.

THE ANTLERS
In 2009, The Antlers pulled off the near impossible by making a record, Hospice, that is both cripplingly depressing and addicting at the same time. They’re back in Chicago this weekend touring with their new record, Burst Apart, which while lacking the sheer weight of their first offering, finds the band expanding the basis of its sound to incorporate more electronic elements. Live, The Antlers bring new life to their melancholic setlist, with each song being equally epic and cathartic. This will be the biggest intimate show you go to all year, and it shouldn’t be missed. (Andy Kondrat)

8:00 p.m. Saturday, 6/11. Metro. 18+ $18.

ORANGE GOBLIN
Britain’s biker doom metalers Orange Goblin come a-calling. Kind of the Molly Hatchet of doom these guys will draw you in with their rad name and radder album covers. Then you’ll hear their music and not really get the connection. But there’s tons of goodness here. For instance, Nachtmystium, whose “Addicts: Black Meddle Part 2″ is still confusing and blowing my mind. Bible Of The Devil have been putting their Thin Lizzy meets Iron Maiden stamp on Chicago’s music scene for over a decade now. Meanwhile, Buried At Sea sound much more like what Orange Goblin would seem to sound like. Slow, chugging doom riffs, lumbering drums, excruciating vocals. That’s an Orange Goblin, damn it. But it’s also the sound of being buried at sea. So get there early is what I’m saying. (Ross Meyerson)

9:00 p.m. Saturday, 6/11. Double Door. 21+. $18-$20.

RODEO
Three oh-wait-I-don’t-have-to-do-three-reasons-for-weekend-diversions reasons to not go on with this bit. Basement show, em effers! Check out some local talent in the friendly confines of a venue you’ve never been to. Why there’s editor in chief Richard Giraldi’s Rodeo still riding high from the release of their debut EP, “Sarcastic Summer”. You like guitars, and you love the 90′s. You love Rodeo. Swimsuit Addition will be there too. We’re still hanging around the 90′s as Swimsuit Addition channel your favorite RRRiot GRRRLLS (spelling?) and add a little surf rock because they can. The Automatic Lovers bring a dirty garage ethic to their snotty punk rock. They’ll be bashing their instruments as well. Last but not least is one of my favorites, Merlin Wall, who bring the nerd to tonight’s festivities. I’m still digging “Crushing From Afar” and eagerly await some new tunes. Be cool. (Ross Meyerson)

7:00 p.m. Saturday, 6/11. 1542 N. Oakley. All Ages. $3 donation if you can.

SUNDAY

THE CATHY SANTONIES
It’s fair to say that we here at Loud Loop love women who rock. There’s just something about that raw passionate energy bursting forth and breaking away from all societal norms. So it kind of goes without saying that we think the Cathy Santonies rock pretty damn hard. We’ve seen them play the tiniest, but loudest, hole in the dark (The Mutiny), but now the quartet is headed back to the Double Door’s spacious and well lit stage. Don’t miss this show. (Audrey Leon)

9:00 p.m. Sunday, 6/12. Double Door. 21+ $5.

All’s well that ends well. Sure, it rained all week, but it’s nice and sunny outside with just a tiny nip in the air. Naturally, that means it is time to party down while we still can. This weekend, especially, is a doozy. There are so many great shows that it is almost impossible to choose among them.

Some of the shows we’re all abuzz over are Gypsyblood at Liar’s Club, Dead Milkmen at Congress Theater and Local H at the Metro. Let’s hop to it, Chicago…

<strongFRIDAY

SOFT SPEAKER
Our own Ross Meyerson practically gushed over Soft Speaker’s debut album I’ll Tend Your Garden. The album is chock full of songs that are simply put, a mish mash of grungey guitar riffs and smoky psychedelic and brit rock influence with a dab of Thom Yorke-ness. The net result is a brilliant first release by the Logan Square quartet. Also on hand this evening are the ghostly 60s girl-group throwback Hollows, scratchy-voiced pop rockers Michael Lux and the Bad Sons (who will have free copies of its debut ep Neat Repeater available) and jangly experimental rockers Dozens. Talk about getting more bang for your buck. (Audrey Leon)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 4/29. Subterranean. 21+ $8.

MOGWAI
The instrumental onslaught that is Mogwai keeps chugging along, with the band having released yet another album of soft-loud awesomeness with the best title we’ve seen this year: Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. Live, the band does something extremely difficult to pull off: though possibly the loudest show you’ll see this year, the technical wizardry of the band is never drowned out. A Mogwai show always has the potentiol of making your top ten shows of all time (Coachella 2006), and I’d have to imagine that seeing them at the Metro is going to be a mind-blowing and ear-numbing experience. (Andy Kondrat)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 4/29. Metro 18+ $25.

GYPSYBLOOD
Locals Gypsyblood have been generating quite a bit of buzz lately with their debut record Cold In The Guestway, what with it’s guitar-heavy, occasionally early ’90s vibe. But let’s not get it twisted, Gypsyblood are their own band as they add in touches of playfulness and humor that some of those alt-90′s bands simply whiffed on. Seeing how tonight’s Liars Club (Yes, THAT Liars Club) show is Gypsybloods’ record release for their debut, they’ve invited along labelmates Cast Spells, who are the folk-pop side project of Maps & Atlases crooner Dave Davison. Opening is a Loud Loop favorite Radar Eyes, who always impress with their dark psych-garage tunes. If you miss this, you will regret it dearly. Yes, that’s a threat. Get over it, crybaby. (Richard Giraldi)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 4/29. Liar’s Club. 21+. FREE!

FIELDED
There’s nothing simple about the one-woman band Fielded. The only instrument Lindsay Powell, who is also vocalist for Ga’an, really needs is her voice. Powell uses synths and samples to twist and manipulate her voice into a rhythm section for haunting ambient pop stylings. To see her music recreated live is well worth the relatively small price of admission. Psych-rockers Verma and Zath, the metal side project of Ga’an drummer Seth Sher, will also appear. (Audrey Leon)

10:00 p.m. Friday, 4/29. The Hideout. 21+ $8.

SATURDAY

BATTLES
Battles’ first full-length album Mirrored is kind of, well, the best thing ever (hitting No. 3 on my top ten albums of last decade). The live show, as well, was beyond stellar. There might not even be a word in the English language to describe how good their shows were. Since that record was released, however, guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Tyondai Braxton has left the band, and Battles’ new record, Glass Drop, is sure to be divisive–the Loud Loop staff has already started drawing lines in the sand over it. The questions, then, are these: will the live show still be phenomenal? Can they play tracks off of Mirrored? Will the lack of guest vocalists live help or hinder the band? There’s only one way to find out the answers to all these questions, and just to sate your curiosity will be worth the price of admission. (Andy Kondrat)

10:00 p.m. Saturday, 4/30. Lincoln Hall. 18+. SOLD OUT.

DEAD MILKMEN
I’ll just go ahead and put this bluntly: The Dead Milkmen is the most essential inessential band I can think of. That is to say, these guys blur the already-sometimes-hazy line between punk rock and novelty, with song titles off my favorite record of theirs – Beelzebubba – including “Born to Love Volcanoes,” “Sri Lanka Sex Hotel,” and “Bleach Boys.” Either in spite of, or because of, the silliness inherent to some of the band’s songs, combined with the actual real punk rock music they produce, this show is guaranteed to be nothing short of a blast. Revered local punks The Lawrence Arms will also appear. (Andy Kondrat)

7:30 p.m. Saturday, 4/30. Congress Theater. All Ages. $18.

MANNEQUIN MEN
According to the Chicago Tribune, locals the Mannequin Men play “math rock, punk, metal, free jazz”. Huh. Well, isn’t that interesting. Here we were all along thinking they played jangly, garage rock with folky hooks. Boy, aren’t our faces red? Anyway, we’re still awaiting their next batch of tunes to get an official release. Maybe that’s where the free jazz shows up? Either way, we’re excited. And so should you for the opportunity to see the band positively wreck it at the Empty Bottle with local indie poppers Sleep Kitty ands E+.

9:30 p.m. Saturday, 4/30. Empty Bottle. 21+. $8.

SUNDAY

LOCAL H
Who doesn’t love a good homecoming? The members of Local H (Scott Lucas and Brian St. Clair) have been traversing the US, supporting of its recent “greatest hits” collection from the band’s Island Records years (i.e. The 1990s). Sunday, the hard rocking duo finally come home to Chicago’s majestic Metro. The 90s were a magical decade and Local H were produced many a great album, but if you are jonesing to hear 1996’s uber popular “Bound for the Floor,” you’re finally in luck. So c’mon and feel the nostalgia. (Audrey Leon)

7:00 p.m. Sunday, 5/1. Metro. All Ages. $15.

TIM KINSELLA & FRIENDS
Tim Kinsella, the mastermind behind such Chicago institutions as Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc and many more, is bringing his indie rock prowess to the Whistler stage with some friends. The friends? Why it’s John Herndon from Tortoise, Theo Katsaounis from Joan of Arc and A Tundra, and Donny Malhmeister, also from A Tundra. The Whistler’s website describes the evening as a “duel” between a “double duo,” but no word on just who will duel to the death. Electro rockers Relay Beken will open the festivities. (Audrey Leon)

9:30 p.m. Sunday, 5/1. The Whistler. 21+ FREE

The big weekend is upon us and, boy, is it a doozy. Saturday is the fourth edition of Record Store Day and, yes, we’re excited. There will be music booming from every corner and crevice all over town and that doesn’t even account for our many revered venues. Check out our Record Store Day guide for all that good in-store information, featuring your favorite local bands like Tyler Jon Tyler, Ornery Little Darlings, the 1900s and more.

All that RSD excitement aside, in this edition of Weekend Diversions, we’re talking up Mike Watt at Schubas, Hollus at the Double Door, and the big, big, big RSD post-party at Bottom Lounge featuring Light Pollution, among many, many others. Let’s get to it.

FRIDAY</strong

MIKE WATT & THE MISSING MEN
Even if you don’t listen to Mike Watt, you’ve heard of Mike Watt and know that he’s a seminal force in punk’s history. The man co-founded The Minutemen, for Christ’s sake. The Stooges tapped him to play bass for their reunion in 2003. Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl were in his touring band in the mid-90′s, which is after they were Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl. So, yeah, Mike Watt’s important, so you should see him play, if only to say you did. But it gets better: for five bucks (if you show up at 7), you get to watch a documentary on The Minutemen, a Q+A with Watt himself, AND see him play with his new band The Missing Men. Seriously. Best deal in town. (Andy Kondrat)

10:00 p.m. Friday 4/15. Schubas. 21+ $15.
BONUS: 7:00 p.m. “We Jam Econo” screening and Q&A – $10 or $5 with Mike Watt ticket

JEFF TWEEDY
Practically an annual tradition, Wilco main man Jeff Tweedy returns to the Vic this weekend for another two-fer of solo shows, which are benefits for The Chicago Lighthouse and Near North Montessori School. As someone who went to one of these solo shows a couple years back, I’ll say it’s quite the experience for any fan of Wilco or Tweedy. The man plays for nearly three hours and delves into oldies, rareities and even new songs that may become a Wilco number in the future. So before you cringe at the price ($50 GA and $150 for super close seats), just know the cash is going to a great cause and Tweedy plays a guitar, not a ukulele. (Richard Giraldi)

7:30 p.m. Friday, 4/15 & Saturday, 4/16. The Vic. $50 – $150.

HOLLUS
Chicago International Movies and Music Festival (CIMM Fest) hits the Wicker Park/Bucktown area this weekend with a plethora of delightful worldly movies, indie music and one hockey musical (I know, I made that face too.). To blow open the festival CIMM is taking over Double Door with a night of epic blues rock featuring Chicago bands Hollus, The Steepwater Band, and Keith Scott Blues Jam. Headed all the way from Bloomington, Ill. to headline is head-in-the-indie-clouds-feet-on-the-alt-country-ground band, Backyard Tire Fire. This mix of classic Chicago dirty blues and indie rock bands will have your boots stomping and hands clapping all night long. (Britni Day)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 4/15. Double Door. 21+ $15-25.

WAX TRAX RETROSPECTACLE
About 33 and 1/3 years ago, there was a pretty popular record store on Lincoln Ave. called Wax Trax. The store opened the ears of Chicagoans of the time to many acts who would now be though of as industrial pioneers including Ministry, KMFDM and The Revolting Cocks. Sadly, the store closed, but the Wax Trax legend lives on – this time in the form of a three night stand at The Metro celebrating the store. While the acts previously named won’t be performing, a select group of people will be performing songs from the said groups, but also set to perform are Front 242, My Life With The Thrill Kill Cult, Rights Of The Accused and more. While Friday and Saturday’s shows are sold out, tickets are still available for the final Sunday performance, but better grab them soon! (Richard Giraldi)

8:00 p.m. Friday, 4/15, Saturday 4/16 and Sunday 4/17. The Metro. 18+. $60 – $500.

SATURDAY</strong

LIGHT POLLUTION
It’s that lovely time of year again when the vendors open their doors and the vinyl flows like wine across the city. It’s Record Store Day, people and the deals are abound! For example, the Bottom Lounge is holding a show good enough to make you drool a little in your afternoon coffee. Are you ready for this line up? Chicago’s own eccentric, jangly rockers Light Pollution; unruly, indie rockers Suns; psychedelic indie pop, Secret Colors; and one of our favorite rowdy garage rockers, Hollows. This show is going to be colossal as these Titans of Chicago indie rock hit the stage. The best part: Bring in a Saki Record Store Day receipt in and your admission is free. Did you fall out of your chair? Good. The second best part: If you don’t have a receipt from Saki this show is a mere $5. Fall out again? Time to get a new chair. Till then, head on over the Bottom Lounge for an awesome night filled with some of the best rock around. (Britni Day)

8:00 p.m. Saturday, 4/16. Bottom Lounge. 17+ $5 or free with RSD receipt

BREATHE OWL BREATHE
Michigan folk rockers Breathe Owl Breathe will bring their smooth rhythm and melodies to your ears at Schubas this Saturday night. Vocalist Micah Middaugh brings a bit of low gruff similar to that of Iron & Wine to the mix. Co-vocalist Andrea Moreno-Beals adds some rich dulcet tones for a beautiful balance. It may be hard not to kick off your shoes and just sway to the slow, folky beats, but contain yourself. You’re in public after all. (Audrey Leon)

10:00 p.m. Saturday, 4/16. Schubas. 18+ $10.

SUNDAY</strong

Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Plugging the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) may be a first here for us at Loud Loop Press, but Sunday’s performance has two things going for it. First off, the CSO is, without exaggeration, world-class, and you’ve got to see them play at least once. Second, they’re playing Dmitri Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony, a hauntingly beautiful piece made all the more stirring given that Shostakovich was all but forced to write the symphony to not become an enemy of the Stalinist Russian government. The history adds a layer of tragedy to the whole experience, as Shostakovich himself stared about the lighter moments of the piece, “The rejoicing is forced, created under threat…It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing.’” (Andy Kondrat)

2:00 p.m. Sunday, 4/17. Chicago Symphony Center. All ages. $22-$135.

CHAMPIONS
Chicago indie rockers Champions are another band celebrating those golden glory days of mid-90s alternative. I’d go out on a limb to say they’re a somewhat subdued version of Irish rockers Ash (remember them?) with big melodies and body shaking back beats. Fellow Chicagoans Third Times A Charm headline. Please note that this is an EARLY show. (Audrey Leon)

6:30 p.m. Sunday, 4/17. Subterranean. All Ages. $10.

Can you believe it’s Friday? I mean, the week practically started only a few days ago. In any event, this weekend is just as packed, if not more so, than it was last weekend. The only difference? It’s going to be hot! Break out those short shorts and sunglasses, Chicago, because it’s going to get all sweaty up in here.

Without further ado, we present our picks for this weekend’s sexiest shows. Be there and/or be square. Ya dig?

FRIDAY

CUT COPY
Cut Copy will make you want to break out those dancing shoes real good. This Australian indie-dance-awesomeness group basically figured out how to fill each and every one of its songs with both joy and darkness, and the end result is majestic majesty in which every song is an epic. Cut Copy’s second album, Zonoscope, takes this description to a whole new level by actually writing honest-to-god epics, with the closing track clocking in at about fifteen minutes. Seeing them live, I’m told, is literally like inhaling sunshine and rainbows. So, hop on that craigslist machine and get yourself a ticket. (Andy Kondrat)

8:00 p.m. Friday, 4/8. Riviera Theater. 18+. SOLD OUT (but if you’re looking: craigslist for about $45 a ticket)

ORNERY LITTLE DARLINGS
Not many bands use the descriptor “sounds like a sexy knife-fight,” but most bands aren’t Ornery Little Darlings. There’s something for everyone in this adorable, but deadly band. Whether it’s the low rockabilly vocals of guitarist Jason Ewers or the super human howls of bassist Emmi Chen, the former duo – now trio with drummer Paul Puschautz manning the skins – bring pure power and rock bravado to every stage they play. It’s a sight to be seen. (Audrey Leon)

8:30 p.m. Friday, 4/8. Reggie’s Music Joint. 21+ $5

SATURDAY

CHIRP RECORD FAIR AND OTHER DELIGHTS
Why, yes, it’s that time of the year again! The time of year where record- and music-lovers all over Chicago converge on Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union to shop for music, listen to music and generally just vibe out. This year, you’ll see some undoubtedly great performances from Village, Ami Saraiya & the Outcome, Daniel Knox, Black Bear Combo and more. It’s like Christmas in April except instead of Santa, CHIRP plays the part of the fat jolly dude handing out presents, but only nothing will be handed out. So really, it’s nothing like Christmas, but we’re excited nonetheless! (Richard Giraldi)

10:00 a.m. Saturday, 4/9 & Sunday, 4/10. Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union (1340 W. Washington Blvd.) $7 or $5 with any flyer that mentioned the record fair (HINT: check Chicagoindieradio.org/recordfair)

GERONIMO!
Excellent things are afoot at Logan Square’s Saki record store this weekend with a lineup club ready. You’ve got the aggressive guitars and slamming drums of Chicago’s Geronimo!, melodic indie rockers The Part Five celebrating their record release and last, but certainly not least, there’s math-poppers DICK WOLF! doin’ their guitar tappin’ thang. Expect awesomeness all around. (Richard Giraldi)

4:00 p.m. Saturday, 4/9. Saki. FREE!

WE LOVE YOU
Look at this! Chicago’s We Love You are playing a show! And not just a show but a record release show about which we had previously gave hints. Check out the new streamlined band cranking out the old school indie rock you kids are clamoring for. Another band we recently highlighted, called Coping are coming along for the ride. The band will have its new split 7-inch in tow as well. Lastly, Jeff Papendorf from Yourself And The Air fame will be trying his hand at a little solo set. Watch him fill 45 minutes with 15 minutes of material! Insider note: All three bands feature members that work at the downtown Trader Joe’s. Unfortunately, no, there won’t be snacks. (Ross Meyerson)

9:00 p.m. Saturday, 4/9. The Mutiny. 21+. FREE!!!

WIRE
Wire first became big with the record Pink Flag, released way back in 1977. That album is rightfully considered a post-punk masterpiece, and bands like Minor Threat and R.E.M. have covered songs off it, and Elastica stole one of the songs for their single, “Connection” (haha, remember that?). The band that recorded that record broke up in 1979, and the original line-up didn’t reform until 1999. But then, something weird happened: the new stuff the band recorded was still amazingly fucking good. This is not a show to go relive the glory of the past, but to watch a band that’s still churning on all cylinders create some really beautiful noise. (Andy Kondrat)

9:00 p.m. Saturday, 4/9. Metro. 18+ $21.

SUNDAY

FRANZ NICOLAY
Of all the great things about seeing a Hold Steady show live (and there are a lot of great things about seeing a Hold Steady show live), one of the most fun bit was watching the keyboard player with the awesome mustache drink wine and provide theatrical flourishes with his backing vocals and exaggerated gesturing. Well, it turns out that guy’s name is Franz Nicolay, and that he’s a far better musician than he ever let onto while with the Hold Steady (he told me once before a show that he’ll throw Beethoven or Chopin riffs into the songs during shows to keep himself amused). So, this Sunday, you can witness Nicolay do his musician thing in all the glory he can muster–which I’m thinking is a whole hell of a lot. Also, his mom is friend’s with my mom’s cousin, so…there’s that, too? (Andy Kondrat)

8:00 p.m. Sunday, 4/10. Schubas. 21+. $10.

THE MAYBENAUTS
Just because it’s Sunday, doesn’t mean you can’t live it up. Our favorite glam pop space cadets The Maybenauts will bring the weekend to a satisfying, rock n’ roll end. Join the band at Subterranean as they try out new material – which we previewed – with lovely, brand-spankin’ new singer Dixie Jacobs at the helm. The ‘nauts will also share the stage with Chicago’s own pop rockers Tiny Bones and new wavers Kitten. (Audrey Leon)

8:00 p.m. Sunday, 4/10. Subterranean 21+ $10.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Radiohead day! But now it’s time to get back to business with our weekend show picks. Today, we dish on Slutter at the Hideout, The Dismemberment Plan at the Metro, Swan King at the Beat Kitchen and more.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

FRIDAY

SLUTTER
There’s nothing quite like watching a quartet of hard rockin’, hard playin’ ladies dressed in full KISS garb to start your weekend off on the right foot. Luckily, you can fulfill your destiny tonight when Chicago’s own all-female KISS tribute band Slutter takes the stage at the Hideout. Not to be outdone, garage rockers The Hamburglars will also appear in their black-and-white striped best. (Audrey Leon

10:00 p.m., Friday, 2/18. The Hideout. 21+ $10.

THE DAN BAND
You remember Old School, right? Of course you do. It’s the last time Jeremy Piven was tolerable. But we all know what scene stole the movie: The filthy version of “Bright Eyes” that the wedding band played in the beginning that was hilarious. And when you saw that, I bet you thought to yourself, “Man, I wish that band actually existed, and toured, so I could get wasted and rock out to their awesomeness live and in person.” And guess what? You’re in luck! The Dan Band (not to be confused with The Band of Dans, which was They Might Be Giants’ touring band for a while) DOES exist, DOES tour, and DOES want you to get wasted and rock out to their awesomeness live and in person Friday night at the House of Blues! So go do that, and have a blast, and bring your green hat. (Andy Kondrat)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 2/18. House Of Blues. 17+. $15.50-$20.

SATURDAY

THE DISMEMBERMENT PLAN
The Dismemberment Plan hasn’t toured since 2003, and I know this quite well because I went to their show, only to leave before they even hit the stage because I had gotten my money’s worth after seeing their opening act, Les Savy Fav. Ah, the foibles of youth. Only now, with my tremendous love for their album Emergency & I, do I realize what I missed out on. However, you don’t have to make the same mistakes I made because D-Plan is playing two (2) shows at the Metro this weekend in celebration of the vinyl release (not even re-release…this album hasn’t seen wax before now) of that amazing record. So you should troll Craigslist, find yourself a ticket, and behold the wonder and beauty that is The Dismemberment Plan. And if you haven’t listened to Emergency & I recently, go dust it off and give it a spin. It’s so fucking good that there’s no way you’ll want to miss them this weekend. Promise. (Andy Kondrat)

7:00 p.m. Saturday, 2/19 & Sunday 2/20. Metro. Saturday 18+/ Sunday All Ages. $21.

MOTORHEAD
I mean, do I even have to tell you why you should go to this? t’s fucking Motorhead, you dumb dummies. Like THE Motorhead. Timeless, ageless, never changing Motorhead. Shit, they’ve got a new album that the people that talk about new albums love. And they are fucking Motorhead! Also, Clutch and Valient Thorr. That’s nice and all but MOTORHEAD! (Ross Meyerson)

7:00 p.m. Saturday, 2/19. Congress Theatre. All Ages. $25.

SWAN KING
At this point, I needn’t point out that everyone loves a record release party. Chicago’s Swan King request your presence at theirs. In exchange for your attendance, they shall throw some metal riffage at you. And, look, they are bringing friends. You get the drone of Chord and the sonic assault of Electric Hawk. You know what else? Because Swan King are giving lads, you’ll get a free CD with admission. Now you’d be an asshole not to go. (Ross Meyerson)

10:30 p.m. Saturday, 2/19. Beat Kitchen. 21+.$8.

SUNDAY

BONGRIPPER
You should know how much I love Bongripper as you’ve read my gushing review of Satan Worshipping Doom and seen said album on my Top 10 of 2010. So, you already know where this is going. Go get your damn faces melted by their sludgy, slow doom already. Enjoy the grindcore of both Sick/Tired and Paucities as well. (Ross Meyerson)

7:00 p.m. Sunday, 2/20. Empty Bottle. 21+. $3.

Chicago’s top winter music festival, Tomorrow Never Knows returns for its seventh year from January 12 – January 16, 2011. TNK has become one of Chicago’s most anticipated musical events because not only is it in a dead time, musically and weather-wise, but it serves up the best of both national and local acts.

UPDATE: There’s been a few updates to the lineup from the TNK 2011 Facebook page. First off, Oberhofer, Cloud Nothings and Jaill have been added to the Handsome Furs show on Saturday, January 15, at Schubas. Bone and Bell will open for Markéta Irglová on Thursday, Januar 13, at Schubas. Local indie rockers Lionlimb have been added to the S. Carey show on Sunday, January 16, at Schubas, and Sun Airway will support The Helio Sequence at Lincoln Hall on Wednesday, January 12. You can find the complete, updated lineup after the jump.

Additionally, five-day pass holders for Tomorrow Never Knows 2011 will get free shuttle ride between Schubas, Lincoln Hall and The Metro courtesy of the Chicago Trolley Company!

A quick glance at the initial schedule looks promising thus far. There are big names such as Besnard Lakes and Freddie Gibbs performing alongside up-and-coming new local groups such as psych outfit A Lull and indie rockers Pet Lions. And, as you will see, there’s still a lot to look forward to as many “Special Guest” spots are reserved for bands that have yet to be announced.

This year, the other big news is that in addition to the usual TNK venues Schubas and Lincoln Hall, the Metro will participate this year on TNK’s Friday and Saturday nights. A limited number of $75 five-day passes and $15 single-day passes will be available this Friday, October 29, beginning at 12:00 p.m. Passes can be purchased at Schubas.com, Lincolnhallchicago.com or Metrochicago.com.
