MONDAY

OOZING WOUND Seeing how it's Metal Monday, in cool people's camps at least, it's fitting that Oozing Wound plays this evening. Featuring two members of the now defunct Cacaw (drummer Kyle Reynolds and guitarist Zack Weil), Oozing Wound will have old-school thrash fans elated with their massive riff barrage, which should also appeal to those who currently dig High on Fire. Their October 2012 release, Vape and Pillage, is head-bang ready with cuts like the careening "Two Forces" or the thunderous "Sustained by Hatred (Rambo 4)." TUESDAY

AMI SARAIYA Eclectic singer-songwriter Ami Saraiya's compositions span the musical spectrum from chamber pop with a bit of Eastern mysticism to blues rock and big band. No doubt Saraiya will showcase her jazzy and soulful vocals through some of her new material tonight. Also appearing are instrumentalist Jared Bartman and local folk singer Ty Maxon. WEDNESDAY

THE BINGERS The Bingers landed on our 13 Chicago Bands to Watch in 2013 because they're just so much fun. Their lo-fi garage rock is equally catchy as it is danceable, which makes their live experience that much more entertaining. Their latest, Rhymes w/ Fingers, does show the band maturing a bit, however, as they slow things down to a soulful crawl on "In a Thought" but the EP will no doubt wake you up with it's concluding fiery fuzz-fest, "The Flying Shitshow Fuckfest Blues." THURSDAY

MAGIC MILK Nothing gets you in the mood to dance more than bouncy garage rock jams that have the power to transport you into a swinging 60s state of mind. Thankfully, Chicago’s own Magic Milk is here to serve this pressing community need. Come get down to Magic Milk’s sleazy, distortion-heavy rockers at the Bottle and maybe pick up their new cassette. Magic Milk love to document their experiences either with photos or video as proved by their always entertaining "Deep Stuff" video diaries. And their new, official video is for the hypnotic psych groover, "Black Rolls Royce," from their latest release NAVKLIMEHTEVAS. The clip is a dazzling, impressively put together collage of photos and videos from their many wild shows, tours and everyday occurrences. It's pretty rad to say the least. Magic Milk's latest, a scraggly DIY three-track collection titled NAVKLIMEHTEVAS, wasn't released under the best circumstances. Earlier this month, Magic Milk's van, aptly dubbed The Milk Van, was the victim of a hit-and-run and is in pretty bad shape. To make matters even more pressing, the garage-psych outfit have a tour coming up soon that inclue some big stops including the 35 Denton festival and SXSW. So, to help with repair costs, Magic Milk are offering the new, digital-only release, NAVKLIMEHTEVAS, as a $7 download. And you know an artist has their heart in the right place when in the Bandcamp liner notes, the band explains the simple decision to charge money for their music:
Under normal circumstances songs like these (digital only, self-released) would be freely available for download and the name of the release would most likely be more cryptic // but this time we really need your help. without the van, the band can't go. if the band can't go, we can't make the show. getting her working again is going to be very expensive.
The good news is that NAVKLIMEHTEVAS is still a fine entry into Magic Milk's catalogue of heady, lo-fi garage rock. The opening track in particular, "Black Rolls Royce," is a punchy take that features a warbling bass groove, hypnotic beat, messy guitar antics and lead singer Kenny Alden's muffled howls. “Take Five” is an interview series that focuses on Chicago’s ever-growing music scene by giving you insight on the city’s best local acts via the best source possible: the acts themselves. We ask five questions, and they give five answers. Here is the latest installment featuring Rabble Rabble. Last time we had a meaningful discussion with Rabble Rabble was in late December of 2010. Back then, they were a definite band on the rise who were building a solid local fan base thanks to their rowdy and liquor-fueled live shows and constant gigging around town. However, Rabble Rabble has taken a step back in the past year and a half or so, and with good reason. Children have been spawned, there's a coffee shop to run, recording, new band members, other projects, etc. But two weeks ago, Rabble Rabble released a music video for their new track, "Cole's Bathroom," one that signifies their rightful return as Chicago's resident rabble-rousers. So, we chatted (via Facebooks) with Rabble Rabble's Ralph Darski and Matthew Ciarleglio about where the band is now and what's next. Here's what they had to say... LLP: So, how did the video for "Cole's Bathroom" come about in terms of idea to execution? Rabble Rabble: Well, we were all at Cole's a couple months ago and Drew maybe had a couple to many shots and started yelling at some chick but then he fell out of his chair. At that point, it was very obvious to us that we should just film the video in there and make Drew the shining star. He's very theatrical. LLP: What is it about the Cole's bathroom that caused the band to write a song about it? Rabble Rabble: If you've ever been in either bathroom at Cole's, then it's pretty obvious what the song is about: People shit talking. The inspiration for the song was taken from the drunk etchings on the walls. Particularly about our band members. LLP: On Rabble Rabble's bandcamp page for "Cole's Bathtoom," it reads, "A song Rabble Rabble recorded during the 2012. A rough year of transition and change for the band." Can you explain what that means? Rabble Rabble: After the past few years of touring and playing all the time we got stagnent as song writers and didn't really write anything that we liked. After Todd left we all realized that things needed to change. Most of 2012 has been us experimenting with our sound and making it more our own. Drew really adds a different dimension to it too. LLP: Can you talk a bit about what some of the other new songs sound like and when we might see an official release? Rabble Rabble: We can't say much right now but we're churning out a lot of material that is heavier, more concise, and we are working more on building out our studio and utilizing it to it's full potential. You'll be seeing new Rabble releases in 2013 (if we're not dead). LLP: Finally on Friday, December 21, at the Empty Bottle, you're playing an "End Of the World Show" with Magic Milk and Vamos as it's the day that marks the end of the world on the Mayan calendar. If the world were really going to end, what would be your final meal, your final drink and the last album you'd listen to? Rabble Rabble: We'd split a large pizza, drink a bottle of Jim Beam, and listen to Zeppelin I. Or Raw Power. We'd definitely shot gun a beer before we died too. And have a couple shots of tequila. On their latest release, Land Lobster, which just dropped in July, The Bingers don't try to do too much. But don't take that the wrong way. Their songs are fairly stripped down garage and surf rock bangers that are full of party time energy. Yet it's the style and attitude of their loose and off-the-cuff delivery that really stands out. "Burnout" is a near-blusey stomper with wandering, warbling lead guitar, while "Cheetah High Heels" is a more fiery take that gets a boost from some snarling, tightly reverbed vocals.
