geronimo!

Three the-heart-of-rock-and-roll-is-still-beating reasons to head down to Panchos tonight…

1. The 90s were a good decade for establishing the parameters of today’s indie rock scene: aggressive, yet Weezer-like in its nerdish leanings. Chicago trio Geronimo! utilize this formula well on the its 2010 LP Fuzzy Dreams and reach new impressive heights on the a Bandcamp teaser for its upcoming follow-up. Come out for the tasty melodic jams and stay for the wailing distortion emitted through Geronimo’s speaker stack. LISTEN: “Design Yourself a Heart.”

Sleepovers

Three got-a-new-dance-and-it-goes-like-this reasons to hit The Burlington tonight…

1. If you’re in the mood for garage pop that can get you on your feet and ready to awkwardly dance amongst strangers, Chicago’s Sleepovers are the band for you. The group makes it rain stiff keyboard licks and reverb-drenched guitar riffs over distorted surf rock. What’s more fun than that? LISTEN: “Sleepovers are Fun.”

Chicago rockers Bailiff are in the midst of a tour in support of their new album Red Balloon, but the busy locals stopped by Audiotree Live to provide us with some ear candy. “Little by Little” is a slow-burning track that leaves you moved and overwhelmed by feelings you never knew you had due to its drawn out, heartwrenching guitar riffs. Eagle-eye readers/viewers will notice that Mutts’ frontman Mike Maimone sat in on the keys for Bailiff during the session, which can be viewed in full here.

Holiday House

Three oh-look-coat-hooks reasons to warm up with some rock and roll at Beat Kitchen tonight…

1. If there’s one way to describe Berwyn’s Holiday House, it’s brooding. The group’s album Weight of Water dives into melancholic, acoustic grunge-rock territory while singer Andrea Donahue’s endearing falsetto is backed with chugging guitars and drumbeats that are dense as bricks. LISTEN: “Rebirth.”

The last time I saw Chicago Americana outfit Dastardly, the ghost of Patsy Cline strangled Katy Perry and guitarist Joe Rauen beat a heckler with a prop cactus. For their Small Chicago appearance, the members of Dastardly were far more subdued (probably thanks to Mr. Jim Beam), although no less passionate than usual. Small Chicago currently has three videos up on its website. But you can watch “Fever” below. Catch Dastardly at the Double Door with Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons on Saturday, Dec. 10. Tickets are $10.

Mutts

Three hike-up-your-long-johns-because-it’s-Thursday reasons to head over to Subterranean tonight…

1. Mike Maimone, Mutts‘ mastermind, has been kicking around the Chicago scene for a while playing with groups such as Company of Thieves, Bailiff, Lying Delilah and Hollus – just to name a few. With all that in mind, it’s almost hard to believe organ-heavy blues rockers Mutts are only celebrating the release of its first full-length (Pray for Rain) now. Anchored by Maimone’s dramatic, rough and tumble vocals, Mutts cut loose on some groovy, dark and dirty jams that should be as fun to watch as they are to hear. LISTEN: “Symmetry.
