Rock’s most tolerable supergroup, Them Crooked Vultures, rocked the Aragon last night and seemed to be in high spirits. Frontman and guitarist extraordinaire Joshua Homme proclaimed Chicago the band’s hometown and made a few chuckle-worthy quips such as, “I’m not Tony Robbins, but I am drunk!” as he gulped down a bottle of vodka. Equally impressive were rhythm guitarist Alain Johannes, formerly of Eleven and QOTSA, and Dave Grohl who sounded and looked fantastic behind the kit. Even the legendary John Paul Jones looked ever like the rock elder statesman by shredding on a variety of basses and even showcased his piano skills. At times, the Aragon sound turned their heavy riffage into a treble-filled garble, but the band’s energy outshined any audio problems. Before their latest release, I’m Going Away, The Fiery Furnaces’ last record was an over-stuffed 51-track, song spliced and mind numbing live album titled Remember. And before that was 2007’s hodgepodge of fuzzy guitars, psychedelic organs and off-kilter melodies, Widow City. So while the term “experimental” might be played out as a musical descriptor, The Fiery Furnaces hardly went out of their way to do anything near the realm of normal. Until now, that is.
