Or something like that, right?

Taking a page out of the ol’ Lollapalooza handbook, the first edition of the jam, electronic and hip hop oriented North Coast Music Festival, this September 3 – 5 in Chicago’s Union Park, has announced a few official after parties.

The difference between Lollapalooza’s after parties and North Coast’s is that you can’t simply skip the big event and hit up the clubs later on. In order to purchase tickets to the North Coast Music Fest after parties, you must purchase an equal or greater amount of tickets to the festival itself.

North Coast Music Festival will be announcing more after shows this week, but the initial after party line up is below.

On Friday, September 3, the Disco Biscuits will hit up the Congress Theatre. Show kicks off at 10 p.m. and is 17+. Tickets are $25 with the purchase of a NCMF ticket and supporting acts will be announced soon. Additionally, Friday will also see California Wives’ CD Release Party go down at Schubas. Show once again starts at 10 p.m., is 17+ and will cost $5 with the purchase of a NCMF ticket.

The Bottom Lounge hosts Boys Noize with Kissy Sellout and more on Saturday, September 4, at 10 p.m. The show is 17+ and tickets are $20 with a NCMF ticket. Also, New Mastersounds and the Family Groove Company will kick it at the Double Door on Saturday as well. The show starts at 10 p.m., is 21+ and tickets are $15 with purchase of a NCMF ticket.

Once again, more shows are expected to be announced soon. You can grab tickets to these shows and the North Coast Music Festival right now at Clubtix.net.

Additionally, in an effort to make traveling to and from shows easier, Riot Fest will be running shuttle buses from the Cobra Lounge to each venue and back, where there may be some late-night show shenanigans going down. Finally, some secret shows that will take place at undisclosed locations in the late summer and fall will be announced at RiotFest.org, so pay attention!

Happy Independence Day weekend everyone! There might not be any fireworks until Sunday this year, but there’s plenty of explosive music happenings going on around town.

This weekend we’re letting you know about Hollows at Lincoln Hall, The Streets On Fire at the Double Door, Tiny Vipers at the Empty Bottle, Obbityfest 2010 and more!

Let’s get to it, shall we?

Friday

HOLLOWS
If you missed retro-pop quintet Hollows playing at Pritzker Pavillion as the opening act for folk/pop duo She & Him, now you can witness the band in more intimate digs at Lincoln Hall. You do not want to miss the feeling of euphoria derived from group’s sugary sweet songs entering your bloodstream. Chicago art rock duo The Loneliest Monk are headlining. (Audrey Leon)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 7/2. Lincoln Hall. 18+ $10.

CENTAURUS
Chicago’s prog-metal gurus Centaurus have a little celebrating to do. Their debut album, “Pulse” is out and it’s a god damned smorgasbord of styles. Full review to come soon by loud loop press’s aging metal head (that’s me) but for now you can catch them live and, I’m sure, pick up the album for yourself. There’s nothing finer than supporting local music, Opener, the technical and angry Capsized and Sinking hail from Forest Park and sound like it? Is Forest Park a haven for gut wrenching metal? It is now. Have I mentioned how sweet metal heads can be? Such a misunderstood lot. I bet if you went up to either of these bands and said hi they’d be more than grateful. Just saying. Some of the most genuinely nice guys I know play some of the ugliest music you’ve ever heard. But I digress. This show will make your eardrums bleed. That’s what you wanted to hear. (Ross Meyerson)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 7/2. Cobra Lounge. 21+. FREE!!!

WATERSTREET
Subterranean will host the eclectic melody-makers this weekend, starting at 9pm tonight. Check out Chicago’s Waterstreet – who are releasing a new EP Of Gossip in late July, and who play serious rock with unexpected and memorable melodies. Also at Sub-T tonight, Kansas-based The Noise FM turns up the juice with well-layered and rhythmic guitar rock. Karate Coyote, hails from Columbus, Ohio, to promote their new LP release, “Inner Animals,” which displays the group’s energy, catchy hooks and high level of musicianship that creates a unique brand of indie/pop. Also on the bill are one of our Top 10 Chicago Bands To Watch in 2010, The Sweeps. $10 at the door. (Jason Shough)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 7/2. Subterranean. 17+. $10

THE STREETS ON FIRE
If you’re an avid reader of Loud Loop Press, no doubt you saw my review of the latest from The Streets On Fire. While not a huge leap forward from their 2009 debut Hot Weekend, This Is Fancy is a more focused affair that finds the band delving into the occasional psychedelics while still brimming with post-punk urgency. Well tonight’s the official record release party (even though the release date isn’t really until July 20 for This Is Fancy), and there’s no doubt in my mind that their new material will absolutely sizzle in a live setting. Also on tonight’s quad bill is up-and-coming indie rockers Big Science. Don’t miss it! (Richard Giraldi)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 7/2. Double Door. 21+. $10

REMAINDERMEN
In left field, the progressive/indie rock group from Chicago, Remaindermen, plays The Beat Kitchen tonight at 10:30 pm with Brother George. The Remaindermen make fuzzy, straightforward rock propped up with grand piano that can at times make the group sound more low-fi than one would expect of a prog rock group. They’ll be celebrating the release of their new vinyl, Border States on Nowhere Records at tonight’s show. (Jason Shough)

10:00 p.m. Friday, 7/2. The Beat Kitchen. 21+. $8

Saturday

HOSPITAL GARDEN
Alternative rockers Hospital Garden will play their brand of heavy, distortion guitar rock this Saturday at the Empty Bottle. The trio recently released their self-titled debut album back in April and they are not to be missed live. Hospital Garden is one band that somehow manages to sound live the way they sound on record. Props must go to guitarist and frontman Lucas Hollow who incorporates a theremin, radio chatter and a trumpet to recreate some of the magic contained on the record live and in person. Arizona melody-makers (and frequent Local H tour mates) Kinch are headlining. (Audrey Leon)

8:30 p.m. Saturday, 7/3. Empty Bottle. 21+ $8.

TINY VIPERS
Seattle’s Tiny Vipers are just one lady, Jesy Fortino. And she is in no rush to get anywhere. If there’s such thing as a minimalist Low, Tiny Vipers would be that. Slowly riding along on guitar and Jesy’s voice elongating most words, Tiny Vipers’s songs possess a dark and menacing vibe. You’d be inclined to call this folk but you’d be pigeonholing. Here comes the weird reference point: There’s the same Northwest creepiness of nature in Jesy’s songs as in fellow Northwesterners Wolves In The Throne Room. Yep. Deal with that. Chicago’s The Spend are Chicago’s Matt Shaw. His acoustic ditties are cut from the Mark Kozelek cloth with reverb and other found sounds adding an air of other worldliness. You should pay attention. What better way to spend the 4th than feeling small and fragile? You’ve got your whole like to BBQ and blow off your fingers. (Ross Meyerson)

9:30 p.m. Sunday, 7/4. Empty Bottle. 21+. $8.

OBBITYFEST
Do you love local music? Do you love free vegan food? Well then, do I have a concert for you! Obbityfest 2010 — the brainchild from those unusual psychedelic rockers The Earth Program — is a smorgasbord of bands, food, friends and fun (BFFF ™). In addition to performances by The Earth Program, Rabble Rabble and Animal City, you can also witness the unbridled fury of Rodeo! They are the next big thing to hit Chicago since Blagojevich’s golden senate seat (™). Get the full lineup and schedule here.

When crafting our Top 10 Chicago Bands To Watch In 2010 list, I made sure The Streets On Fire were included solely because I thoroughly enjoyed their debut EP Hot Weekend. Honestly, I had no idea what the band’s plan was for 2010, but luckily they’ve lived up to our hype with the release of their first full-length record This Is Fancy. Fancy finds the band expanding on the danceable, gritty post-punk of Hot Weekend, but they’ve definitely stepped up their game and sound much more focused on this record. But they also let their new material open up and breathe, giving Fancy much more atmosphere, mood and feeling than their previous effort, and that’s why This Is Fancy is one fun record.

While most of the time, it’s best for a band to try something different with a new album, the same can be said for bands trying to refine their sound from one album to the next. The Strokes did this with Room On Fire, while not drastically different from their debut, it was a very solid album and pushed them into super stardom in the early 2000’s. To a similar degree Pearl Jam has been doing this for most of their career – although some efforts more successful than others. That’s just two out of thousands of example and I’m definitely not comparing The Streets On Fire to those two bands. But the point I’m trying to make is that it’s okay for a band to sit and flesh out their sound than risk it all with a huge gamble (See MGMT).

Chicago’s The Streets On Fire indeed sit on their sound, and the result is the fiery, danceable and snarling This Is Fancy. No major leaps forward, no dips into the digital world, just passionate and frenzied post-punk. But this time we get 11 tracks rather than six, which was the max for Hot Weekend. And while Hot Weekend definitely did not sound rushed or unfocused, you can still hear some nerves of the band through your speakers or headphones. The EP was good, but it was obvious Hot Weekend was a first effort. Now with a full-length, The Streets On Fire have delved into more psychedelic leanings and open up the songs to more complex instrumentation.

“Hello, from Eastern Europe” is one track the encompasses everything right with This Is Fancy. It opens with a drowning bass line and ’60s psych-guitar swirls under what sounds like a man speaking in Russian. Then the song completely heads toward stoner-rock droning territory. It’s a different move for The Streets On Fire, but one that makes complete sense. Sure, it lacks the dance-y cymbal play they excel at, but it’s a hell of a lot more head-bobbing and devil-horns-to-the-sky than anything they’ve done before.

If “Hello, from Eastern Europe” had a foil on the record, it would be opener “No One’s Fucking To The Radio”, which features Warbling phased-out guitar and urgent drumming via Gabriel Palomo that hurdles the track through space as frontman Chadwick dementedly snarls, “No one’s fucking to the radio!” While not completely new, it’s a refinement of The Streets On Fire’s approach on Hot Weekend. The refinements might be subtle, but as the quote goes, and I’m certain the band would agree, “the devil is in the details.”

“Chadwick Shut Up!” offers a echo-y car chase riff over a energetic hi-hat tailspin. Bassist Sebastian Brzek shakes the walls in the dark new-wave number “Astronaut Love Triangle” that sometimes even encroaches on Bowie glam rock territory. “Fancy” is a slow-lurching waltz that really comes into it’s own as Chadwick rambles his way through until a massive classic rock howl bring things to a new level. It’s quite a heavy song more in attitude than in sound, but that’s why it works.

And if I could pull a comparison from current sports culture: If The Streets On Fire were a basketball team and guitarist Yuri Alexander was a free agent, they should offer him a multi-million dollar immediately. Seriously, the man is on fire on Fancy. His guitar lines really make the songs come alive because of his awareness. He seems to know when to pull back, when to add more, when to make the guitar sound more like a noise machine and when to make the guitar sounds like an angular jackhammer. Don’t believe me? Just check out the second half “Color Stereo” in which Alexander does some awesome theremin-esque noodling.

On This Is Fancy, The Streets On Fire come along way in that they’ve seemed to really find their sound. Plus, the record is also quite an achievement as it actually sounds like a complete album, which is something most up-and-coming local bands tend to shy away from in order to release singles or brief EPs instead of a seemingly intimidating full-length. While Hot Weekend was the crazed drunk Saturday night party album, This Is Fancy just might be the week-long bender with a side of hallucinogens thrown in for good measure.

Hey Chicago! Once again: Thanks so much for voting for us for in the Chicago Reader’s Best Of Chicago 2010 Reader’s Poll. WE WON! Oh yeah!

You can celebrate in our name at plenty of show this weekend including three chances to catch Maps and Atlases, My Gold Mask at the Hideout, The Melvins at the Double Door and more!

Let’s get to it, shall we?

Friday

THE MELVINS
Buzz Osbourne and his frizzy mountain of fro-like curly hair will invade the Double Door with his band the Melvins on Friday night in support of their 19th album The Bride Screamed Murder. If you are anything like me you obsessed over anything and everything even remotely connected to Nirvana when you were 12. You took pride in listening to the less famous bands in the “scene” like Mudhoney and, of course, the Melvins. The Melvins were (and are) widely known for their menacing, sludge-filled riffs that influenced a host of bands including Tool and Boris. The first 50 people with tickets to Friday’s show gain admittance to what can only be described as a battle royale, Melvins vs. the Double Door staff in a hardcore game of…wiffleball. Rock ’n’ roll! (Audrey Leon)

8 p.m. Friday, 6/25. Double Door. 21+ $25.

Saturday

MAPS AND ATLASES
Their debut album, Perch Patchwork, comes out June 29th but Chicago’s Maps And Atlases are getting out there anyways for to play tunes for you. First stop, Chicago Ave.’s Permanent Records for a little free in-store. Local indie band plays local indie record store. It’s like I-Tunes doesn’t even exist. At least for one day. If you’re looking for something more formal – or just work late – their official release party will be at the Subterranean later that evening. Brooklyn’s very Brooklyn-y Fang Island open. <del>My mom never said if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all. But I heard it somewhere</del>. (Ross Meyerson)

5:00 p.m. Saturday, 6/26. Permanent Records. All Ages. Free!
Doors 9:00 p.m./Show 10:00 p.m. Saturday, 6/26. Subterranean. 17+. $12.

WOVEN BONES
Austin’s Woven Bones are roaming in support of their freaky new album, “In and Out and Back Again”. If you haven’t heard, they play a driving garage oriented mind-fuck kind of rock ‘n’ roll. The kind that small children might run and hide from. Some adults, too. Red Mass come from Canada. I think one of their singers is Drakula. I’m fairly certain, actually. Chicago’s Mickey and Radar Eyes round of the bill. The former are the musically equivalent to the Wacky Races and the latter devotees of Joy Division. Prepare to be freaked out, man.

9:00 p.m. Saturday, 6/26. Empty Bottle. 21+. $8.

MY GOLD MASK
Chicago’s mighty art-rockin’ duo (I think any band that’s opened for the New Pornographers have earned the right to be called ‘mighty’) return to the Hideout on Saturday night. Loud Loop and My Gold Mask have a long history dating back to, uh, February at which time we posted an extensive interview with Gretta and Jack. Oh, but the best news about the show? According to the band’s Twitter, they’ve been hard at work on new songs and a new cover. If it’s half as good as their cover of Betty Davis Eyes, then we’re in luck! (Richard Giraldi)

8:30 p.m. Friday, 6/25. The Hideout. 21+. $8 advance/$10 at the door.

THE CATHY SANTONIES
If I have learned one thing about Chicago, it has a lot of extremely talented females. The Cathy Santonies describe their music as “a subversive mix of riot grrrl and cock rock.” I know what you’re thinking, how is that possible and didn’t the Donnas already do that? Well, the Cathy Santonies do it better; the band has emerged as heir apparent to the throne of such influential women rock groups as Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney. If you don’t believe me, check out the track “Warrior” from its new EP I’m Yr Friend! I’m Yr Revolution!. Want another reason to come out to this show? Mud Queens of Chicago are the main event. Rock and mud wrestling… what could go wrong? Plus the lovely ladies from Wanton Looks will be ripping shit up with their brand of fearsome power-punk. (Audrey Leon)

7 p.m. Saturday, 6/26. Reggie’s Rock Club. 17+ $10.

Sunday

GREEN MUSIC FEST
So you missed Maps and Atlases on Saturday at both their in store and at the Subterranean – fear not! You can catch them again at Green Music Fest on Sunday, June 27. Other acts set to perform at the only Chicago street fest with an eco-friendly vendor village are Fang Island and Cloud Cult on Sunday, or get there on Saturday night for the Wailers! And don’t forget – there’s free bike parking! (Richard Giraldi)

Noon – 10 p.m. Saturday, 6/26 & Sunday, 6/27. Chicago Ave. between Ashland and Noble. All Ages. $5.

1. San Francisco’s Sleepy Sun are another cog in SF’s psychedelic revival machine. The machine is running quite effectively these days. Sleepy Sun, however, inject their music at times with a bit of folk, soul, and dare I say FM style lite-rock. Sure, they freak out and reverb the crap out of you but sometimes they are willing to just breeze along like a sleepy sun-filled day. It’s true.

2. Iowa’s Mondo Drag swim in the same musical lake as the Sleepy Son. I’m trying to keep the summertime metaphor moving along, ok. It’s guitar heavy but not head down guitar heavy. I’d say more bubblegum chewing or cigarette dangling on the lip heavy. Mondo Drag at times dip their feet into the stoner rock waters but never dive in. Are you tiring of this imagery yet?

3. Michigan’s The Hounds Below, featuring Jason Stollsteimer of Von Bondies fame, whittle on the front porch of Roy Orbison while skipping stones across the early days of rock ‘n’ roll. They definitely wear sunglasses, of that much I am sure. Anyways, this seems to be a pretty swell line-up kids that just want to get a little bit weird for you. Don’t forget your sunscreen. You know you freckle and burn easily.
Doors 8:00 p.m./Show 9:00 p.m. Thursday, 6/24. Double Door. 21+. $10 general admission/$20 premium section.

Chicago’s largest festival unleashed their aftershow lineup this morning, which for some is even more important than the festival lineup. Here’s the rundown of who you can catch around town this August 5 – 8.

1. Minneapolis’ Guzzlemug play that kind of deep, heavy, post-metal instrumental music that I wholeheartedly endorse. Fat bass and galloping drums…check and check. Weird progressive twists and turns…you got it. But that’s not to say there aren’t riffs because there are riffs when riffs are needed. And vocals, too. I know what I just said, but instrumental bands can have vocals. Look it up. Better yet, check Guzzlemug out for yourself.

2. This night promises to be all over the map. Chicago’s Origin of Animal are pretty jazzy. I don’t mean that in a they-play-some-other-genre-of-music-but-hint-at-jazz way either. They employ kind of a noir vibe a la the Lounge Lizards, but it is jazz none the less. Like I said, pretty interesting line-up.

3. Zach Fowler opens. Don’t mind Zach Fowler. Let’s talk headliner, San Francisco’s We Be The Echo, who play progressive metal that at times shreds and at times hangs over the edge of clever clever. The best prog bands do this. It’s that fear of falling off the cliff into total wankery that can make it so exciting. With songs like “Shredder Of Wheat And Souls”, it’s hard to tell how seriously We Be Echo take themselves. It’s like Primus all over again!

Doors 8:30/Show 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, 6/8. Double Door. 21+. $5.

Big Science have been rocking Chicago’s music scene with their post-punk/new wave sounds since 2007. In 2009, the band was recognized by the Independent Music Awards (IMA) for their track “My Career As A Ghost” as it won AEMMP Records the ninth annual IMA Award for its inclusion on their compilation.

According the press release, the band sifted through 800 (wow!) musical ideas that were narrowed down to 50 working song drafts before completely refining everything into five tracks for Skyscraper Sound.

Check out the Big Science track “1000 Years” from Skyscraper Sound below:

Good afternoon, Chicago! We hope this beautiful Friday finds you well. This weekend is looking great as we’re excited for tomorrow night’s beginning of the Blackhawks march toward returning Lord Stanley to this windy city. If hockey’s not your style, there’s plenty of great music to check out.

In this edition of Weekend Diversions, we’re spotlighting Sequoia at Ronny’s, Brian Jonestown Massacre at The Metro, Bully In The Hallway at Lincoln Hall and more!

Lets get to it, shall we?

Friday

SEQUOIA
Chicago’s Sequoia are cut from a 90’s alt-rock cloth. Big guitars, big drums, buried vocals. If you’re thinking Hum you wouldn’t be far off. Add a touch of post-Lou Barlow Dinosaur Jr. and you’d be on the right track. Omaha’s It’s True is none of those things. There’s is a lush and delicate sound with beyond the pale gorgeous vocals, like the unholy alliance of Jeff Buckley and Sade. Chicago’s Haywood Yards are Americana? Roots? Oh, there are fiddles and banjos, but this isn’t typical bluegrass or country. By now, you and I are both confused by this line-up. Well then, Brice Woodall’s electronic beats should fit snugly in by not fitting snugly in at all. Give Ronny’s credit for giving you a smorgasbord of styles with which to pick and choose. (Ross Meyerson)

8:00 p.m. Friday, 5/28. Ronny’s. 21+. $5.

Saturday

BULLY IN THE HALLWAY
Chicago rockers Bully In The Hallway hit up Lincoln Hall on Saturday night. The band calls themselves “indie” rock on their myspace, but there aren’t many indie sounds in their new brief but energetic Advice EP. Bully In The Hallway plays fast and powerful rock n’ roll in the vein of the Foo Fighters with a bit of some old-school punk tendencies and Fugazi-esque vocals thrown in. Oh, and did I mention that they’re opening for Chicago punk stalwarts The Smoking Popes? Oh, yeah. They are. Also on the bill are locals Shot Baker. Yay! Punk Rock! (Richard Giraldi)

8:00 p.m. Saturday, 5/28. Lincoln Hall. All Ages. $15.

MEMBERS OF MORPHINE AND JEREMY LYONS
Catchy name, that. Members of Morphine and Jeremy Lyons –AKA The Elastic Waste Band–are just that. The two surviving members of Morphine–a band I used to love and I still feel ok about that–recruited Jeremy Lyons and his Delta blues ways and hit the road playing re-worked Morphine tunes. I’m usually here to judge but today I’ll let you. A couple of Chicagoland’s finest, and previous Daily Diversion stars, Dorian Taj and Clip Art – the latter in the pole position to claim summer jam 2010 with their perfectly perfect pop gem “Dead Letter” – open. Rescue School are also on the bill, but a truly exhausted search merely netted me Rescue The Hero’s absolutely mind-numbingly and banal music. Thanks to AV Club for the wrong link. Rescue The Hero are here to remind you that, no matter how much you love music, there are forces trying to destroy it. Enjoy. (Ross Meyerson)

Doors 8:00 p.m./Show 9:00 p.m. Saturday, 5/29. Double Door. 21+. $15-$30.

Sunday

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE
The infamous Brian Jonestown Massacre will descend upon the Metro this Sunday to promote its latest independent album Who Killed Sgt. Pepper. The band caught international attention in 2004 as the focus of the 2004 Sundance jury prize-winning documentary “DiG,” which chronicled the band’s history and crumbling friendship with fellow West Coast rockers the Dandy Warhols. The 60’s psychedelic revivalists are well-known for its contentious and wild stage antics by band leader Anton Newcombe. So come out and enjoy some good tunes and the ensuing madness. (Audrey Leon)

7:00 p.m., Sunday, May 30. Metro. 18+. $21.
