Holy smokes! This might be the best weekend for live music in Chicago outside of Pitchfork Fest and Lollapalooza weekends. So many shows. So little time. Read on for previews of Evan Dando at the Double Door, Tortoise at Lincoln Hall, Scott Lucas and the Married Men at Schubas and that’s just scratching the surface.
But before we get to the shows, a reminder that Loud Loop Radio will be back on the air tomorrow, Saturday, February 20, at 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Radio DePaul.
Anyway, we’ve got a whole lot of ground to cover. Lets get to it, shall we?

Those who braved the snow were taken on a thrill ride last Wednesday night at Double Door where Earth Program blew minds, Evil Beaver melted faces, and Polysics made us all dance like maniacs.
It’s true. We crossed more than musical borders at Double Door; we crossed cultural borders with 3-D glasses, gold pompoms and one screaming, feather encrusted bass. This unlikely line-up pulled from the four corners of the globe made for one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

We got double Daily Diversions today! Here are six reasons to dig yourself out of the snow and head to either the Bottom Lounge OR the Double Door tonight to get your Wednesday night rock on….
Three reasons to screw shoveling your driveway and head on over to the Bottom Lounge tonight to get your face melted…
1. Because if it is really snowpocalypse ‘10, might as well go out hearing some kick ass local metal right? Well tonight, the Bottom Lounge welcomes Chicago’s own Shifting Totem, a heavy metal trio that take most of their influence from old school acts such as Metallica, Deep Purple and Motorhead. Lead singer and guitarist Aaron Block does a great job of not overdoing it on the vocals. Instead ear-bleeding screams, Block delivers Lemmy-type vocals, but most of the time he simply lets the gritty riffs, boomy bass and machine-like drumming do the talking. Check out this clip of Shifting Totem performing at the Elbo Room last year after the jump…

Three reasons to check out The Streets On Fire tonight at the Double Door…
1. Because The Streets On Fire were one of our 10 Chicago Bands To Watch In 2010. On paper, the band’s sound makes no sense. A dance-y rhythm backed by angular, almost synth-like guitars and demented rambling? But when everything comes together, such as on their impressive debut release, Hot Weekend, it really makes sense and rocks damn hard.

YAWN may very well be Chicago’s answer to Sigur Ros or Animal Collective. On their latest release, E.P, the group’s computerized blips, swirling vocals and bombastic drum loops often walk the line between danceable and hypnotic thanks to an extremely sleek production. And while YAWN seem to revel in creating lush soundscapes and exotic interludes, their songs offer a precise focus that often gets lost in the electro-dance-loop genre.

Hard rock duo Local H conjured up a special space-themed New Year’s Eve show for a sold out performance at the Double Door last Thursday.
Dubbed “2010: The Year We Break Contracts” — a play on the movie title 2010: The Year We Make Contact, the 1984 sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed 2001: A Space Odyssey — the show began with frontman Scott Lucas and drummer Brian St. Clair donning matching white space suits equipped with helmets. Local H ripped through such spacey rock classics as Pixies’ “Planet of Sound,” David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” and Pink Floyd’s “Eclipse” before launching into its own material.
