This weekend, we plan on getting Blacked Out at the Empty Bottle, do some Dumpster diving at the Burlington, make a Day of it at Cole’s and so much more.
Let’s do this…

This weekend, we plan on getting Blacked Out at the Empty Bottle, do some Dumpster diving at the Burlington, make a Day of it at Cole’s and so much more.

Let’s do this…

FRIDAY

HOZAC BLACKOUT FEST
It has return..eth! The garage slash punk slash rock ‘n’ roll fest thrown by Chicago’s own HoZac Records is back – this time in the neighborly confines of the Empty Bottle. And the imprints isn’t sparing the fire power with headliners like the alt-punk stalwarts Redd Kross (performing their fiery 1982 debut Born Innocent), Puerto Rican garage rockers Davila 666 and psychedelic rock legend Roky Erikson. The rest of the lineup offers familiar faces both locaally and non from across the stylistic spectrum including experimentalists ET Habit, redheaded garage rockers White Mystery, surf-poppers Fungi Girls, neo-psychers Bare Mutants, alien-punks Human Eye and that’s just skimming the surface. Unfortunately, Sunday’s fun, starring Roky E himself, has sold out, but there’s still time for you to carve out five hours on Friday and Saturday evening for some rowdy and ear-splitting good times. (Richard Giraldi)

5:00 p.m. Friday, 5/18 & Saturday 5/19, 7:00 p.m. Sunday 5/20. The Empty Bottle. 21+. $20 Friday, $25 Saturday & Sunday.

SECRET COLOURS
Get ready to dust off the week with some lush garage rock courtesy of Chicago outfit Secret Colours. Within a few seconds of hearing the opening chords of “Faust,” the opening track off Secret Colours’ recent EP3, I was overcome by an overwhelming sense of serenity. With a clear mind, I was definitely ready to get lifted by the group’s dreamy psych-pop touches. Also on hand tonight to boost your morale are Los Angeles psychedelic rockers Spindrift and Strangers Family Band. (Audrey Leon)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 5/18. Beat Kitchen. 17+ $10.

SATURDAY

DUMPSTER BABIES
Does it feel like late April to you? No? Well, it should. April 26, to be exact, because that date was the last time we saw the likes of Dumpster Babies play along with the likes of Absolutely Not and Hot Garbage. The trio of chicago garage punks like each other so much they thought they’d recreate the magic. So if you like rattling, 60s-eque rockers or frenetic dance punk or even screamy experimental rock duos, look no further than the Burlington tonight. (Audrey Leon)

9:00 p.m. Saturday, 5/19. Burlington. 21+ $5.

THE DAY LEWIS
If a few of the members of The Day Lewis look familiar, that’s because two of them (Rob Majchrowski and Eric Quinlan) also play in the noise-rock trio We Repel Each Other. But in The Day Lewis, along with others, they create something a tad more palatable – melodic and dark pop slash alt-rock that’s at times even reaches up-tempo feels. Also performing are lo-fi melancholy poppers Esoteric Tapioca and Snapper. (Richard Giraldi)

9:30 p.m. Saturday, 5/19. Cole’s. 21+. Free.

SUNDAY

RUNNING
Running can really wail. No, seriously. The group makes a meal out absolutely heavy (and I mean, fucking heavy), thudding drum beats, tortured vocals and shrieking guitars. Somehow noise rock enthusiasts doesn’t cut it as a description because noise in all its contorted, fuzzy forms is an art in which the band truly excels. If you know a better way to work out your frustrations, I don’t want to hear it. Also appearing tonight are New York synth-punks Pop.1280, melodic indie rockers Brain Idea, and post-punks Toupee. (Audrey Leon)

<s>9:00 p.m. Sunday, 5/20. Treasure Town. 21+ $5.</s>
6:30 p.m. Sunday, 5/20. CROWN TAP ROOM. 21+ $5.

There’s nothing more pleasant than opening your inbox and finding the tasty new video for “Electromagnetic Force” by hard rockers The Wanton Looks. The song’s own playfulness lends itself to an equally cheeky video and this one definitely has a mid-90s MTV alt-rock video feel to it with the fabulous foursome primping and playing their tune in various locales around Chicago including Livewire Lounge. The sledgehammer bit at the end is also pretty rad. You can catch The Wanton Looks live and in person at Underground Lounge along with The Sonnets, Tiny Riots and Sky Road Fly on Thursday, April 19.

1. If there was one word to describe Chicago dream popper Architecture‘s When We Were Young EP, it’s enchanting. The trio of Rebecca Scott and Melissa Harris (also of the band Panda Riot), along with Erin Dorr, bewitches listeners with lush atmospherics, ethereal vocal harmonies and distressed guitars flourishes. Architecture’s low-key melodies are nothing short of magic. LISTEN: “in the morning“

2. Brilliant Brazilian indie poppers Some Community create an endearing collection of mostly upbeat rockers that still manage to sting with a bit of twinkling melancholy. Lead vocalist Juliana Vacaro impresses with warm harmonies that shoot into the air like a bottle rocket blend of Neko Case and Chrissie Hynde. The end result is the perfect soundtrack for a sun-filled vacation. LISTEN: “Head and Tail“

3. Chicago’s Videotape draws heavily from early 90s shoegazers like Stereolab and even Mazzy Star on its self-titled EP. The quartet fashion a heady mix of ghostly wailing harmonies and buzzing spaceship-esque bleeps and blorps that rise ever so menacingly over traditional guitars and drum beats. It’s familiar, kind of like being at home. LISTEN: “The Ship is Sinking“

9:30 p.m. Thursday, 4/5. Empty Bottle. 21+ Free w/RSVP or $8.

2. Nashville quartet Heavy Cream put the Joan Jett back into gritty pop punk. Don’t let the three ladies and one guy of Heavy Cream fool you. They may look cute and harmless, but lurking underneath is pure badassery. Heavy Cream crafts smart, bouncy rockers that are both fun and completely serious. The music comes at you with fuzzed out rays of sunshine, like the band’s first single “Watusi” and then rip you to shreds with furious, grinding tunes like “Tina.” LISTEN: “Run Free“

3. Rounding out the night’s two other opening spots are some fantastic local talent. First up is The Artist Formerly Known as Vince (TAFKAVince). The Chicago group plays up the power pop quotient with plenty of wailing guitars and glam rock style. Opening the show are dance punks Absolutely Not. The band will get the party started with plenty of deep, thumping beats and crunchy guitar riffs. LISTEN: Absolutely Not – “I Don’t Want to Get Married“

1. If you ever desire a little bit of fizzy pop flavor to accompany your bucket full of grinding metallic guitar riffs and brooding, beastly drum beats, then look no further than Chicago’s own Shotgun Zombie. The quartet display some of the same edgy experimental hardcore in which bands like Thrice specialized, but Shotgun Zombie also opt for a little bit of synthesizer action to cleanse the palate. It’s definitely fast, and its almost certainly furious. LISTEN: “Show me the Rulebook“

2. And just like that the whole night can shift. Chicago’s Back Alley Riot whisks us away to a world where southern rock commingles with punk. All that fraternizing gives way to a couple of sped up rockers that sneer with punk rock attitude but ooze twangy swagger. LISTEN: “I See Red“

3. Bass-heavy local punks Blastoff are as old school as a band can get that has only been around for a couple of months. The band’s love of Black Flag, DRI and Minor Threat really shine through on tracks like “$13 Moons” and “G.A.S.” Blastoff chugs along with heavy, solid riffs and sloppy, but powerful beats. Ramones cover band The Ungrateful Punks will open the show.

FRIDAY

BLIZZARD BABIES
I’m a lady. And ladies love the rock. It’s true. Chicago’s Blizzard Babies pump out some great minimalist punk tunes. The quartet revisits the ghosts of riot grrl, punk and even surf rock on its self-titled debut. Also on hand for this shingdig are New York’s Xray Eyeballs who blend the thick, rumbling bass and scratchy guitars that are commonplace with most garage rock acts with the fun sneer of synthpop so effortlessly, I’m jealous I didn’t do it first. Headliners Magnetix bring their oh, so sexy, French fuzz and sludge version electro-rock. (Audrey Leon)

10 p.m. Friday, 3/23. Empty Bottle. 21+ $8.

SATURDAY

NIGHT BEATS
Seattle’s Night Beats bring back a funky classic psych-pop sound that comes equipped with squeaky-clean guitar solos and hazy vocal harmonies. It’s all wavy gravy. Also appearing tonight are Chicago rockers Radar Eyes, who just released their long-awaited debut album. You shouldn’t miss their catchy pop tunes, which are lovingly wrapped in thick walls of fuzzy distortion. Opening the show is local punk trio Sore Subjects. (Audrey Leon)

10 p.m. Saturday, 3/24. Empty Bottle. 21+ Free w/ RSVP or $8

SUNDAY

CURSIVE
If you follow my writing for LLP with any regularity, you could venture a guess that I love all things Tim Kasher. And that’s pretty accurate. The moody indie rockers have just released its seventh album I Am Gemini. The band has always done an amazing job of pairing beautiful soundscapes (strings, horns, etc.) with the grotesque (bitter lyrics, roaring guitars, crashing drums). Kasher is a quirky guy. Also appearing are soothing alt-rockers Cymbals Eat Guitars [see below] and dreamy Omaha rockers Conduits. (Audrey Leon)

8:00 p.m. Sunday, 3/25. Lincoln Hall. 18+ SOLD OUT.

CYMBALS EAT GUITARS – Epitonic Session
New York indie rockers Cymbals Eat Guitars are the bastard sons of Pavement and early Smashing Pumpkins, you know back when Billy Corgan was just beginning to change the world. The group is intriguing due to its zero-to-60 mood changes. Cymbals Eat Guitars can be both sparkling in its sleepiness and both blistering in its alt-rock intensity. You never know what you’re going to get and that’s probably for the best. Also appearing are Chicago psych-poppers Secret Colours. (Audrey Leon)

2:00 p.m. Sunday, 3/25. Saki (3716 W. Fullerton Ave). All Ages. Free!!!

We don’t need no stinkin’ vowels!” reasons to hop, skip or jump over to the Empty Bottle tonight…

1. There certainly seems to be a nationwide love affair happening with ye old surf rock. However, I’m not talking about your dad’s surf rock. No, you won’t find any Dick Dale riffs around here. Costa Mesa, California, quartet TRMRS is all about that good time rock’n'roll fun. The group mix plenty of warm sunshine into its drenched-in-reverb psychedelic pop tuneage. They call it Trash Pop, I call it bleach blanket bingo music. LISTEN: “Hello Self“

2. Logan Square surf punks Slushy are the perfect compliment to headliners TRMRS. The group is heavily inspired by 60s surf and 70s punk. The combination produces slow-burning punk jams that sparkle with just a hint of the Ramones. There’s plenty of fuzz to go around when Slushy shows up and that’s sure to get more than just your toes tapping. LISTEN: “Teenage Frankenstein“

3. Getting this show off to a rowdy start are local garage rockers The Bingers. Equipped with dress suits, guitars that both crunch and blister with walls of distortion, The Bingers howl and screech with plenty of classic, noisy goodness. LISTEN: “Cheetah High Heels“

You used to be cool,” reasons to head on over to Beat Kitchen and avoid that sun…

1. Brooklyn baroque poppers North Highlands are the perfect band with which to kick back and settle into some mellow. The group’s twinkling atmospherics mixed with shimmering guitar work will leave you floating. Vocalist Brenda Malvini’s gentle harmonies tie North Highland’s dreamy compositions together with a big red bow. There’s an air of similarity between North Highlands and post-rocking Brits Electrelane, but where Electrelane’s bend toward the experimental hit harder and faster, North Highlands’ takes some time to smell the roses. LISTEN: “Chicago.”

2. Chicago quintet Lightfoils confirms that shoegaze is not dead. Seriously, it’s written on their Facebook page. Despite that introduction, Lightfoils is legit. The group harnesses the raw energy of big vocals and even bigger melodies combined with soaring guitar and drums to light up your ear drums with pure sonic pleasure. Kudos, my friends. LISTEN: “Take Care Tonight”

3. Local indie poppers Death Ships run the gamut from twangy folk to the lighter side of alt-rock ala bands like the Foo Fighters and Nada Surf. The band expertly blends spacey pop melodies with big, booming rhythms. Locals On Again Off Again will open the show with its brand of smoke-tinged jazzy folk pop.

If you’re tired of the same ol’, same ol’ St. Patricks Day fun (You know. Drinking until you Puke green.), then perhaps you should head to one of these fine show this weekend. We’re talking Volcanoes Make Islands at Beat Kitchen, Roach Beach at The Burlington, Japan Nite at the Double Door and more!

Let’s do it…

FRIDAY

VOLCANOES MAKE ISLANDS
One thing that struck me upon first listen of Volcanoes Make Islands’ 2010 EP, Sick City, is how catchy its songs were. Each track was more infectious than the next. And before you know it, you’re singing along like you’ve known them forever. VMI incorporate a little bit of everything: melodic pop, groovy psychedelics, and even some soothing folk twang set to fuzzy atmospherics. It’s pop rock gumbo at its finest. Also appearing are indie poppers Inspector Owl, hip-hoppin’ pop rockers Katz Company, and Roots rockers Verona Red headline. (Audrey Leon)

8:30 p.m. Friday, 3/16. Beat Kitchen. 21+ $8.

A TUNDRA
Locals A Tundra bring their melodic art-pop to the Burlington tonight. The band has been compared to Deerhoof by two different Loud Loop Press writers – and I’d say that’s correct to a degree. While definitely not as twitchy as Deerhoof, A Tundra do combine pop instrumentations and vocals in a twisted, roundabout way to create something that borders on rock but also keeps it cool and, occasionally, collected. Opening are afro-poppers I Kong Kult. (Richard Giraldi)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 3/16. The Burlington. 21+. $5.

SATURDAY

ROACH BEACH
There’s a lot to like about Chicago trio Roach Beach. The group fulfill my need for grungey 90s rock while simultaneously taking me out of the Pacific Northwest realm and into LA’s stoner punk scene. Roach Beach unite the hazy crunch of Mudhoney, the melodic pop of Dinosaur Jr and meld it with the thudding grooves of Kyuss and throw in the scratchy, deep growl of Mark Lanegan for good measure. Rounding out tonight’s nautical theme, Chicago alt-rockers Sunken Ships will headline. (Audrey Leon)

9:00 p.m. Saturday, 3/17. The Burlington. 21+ $5.

GERONIMO!
Nothing says St. Patrick’s Day like punchy indie rock. So, it’s a good thing that that’s exactly what locals Geronimo! specialize in. While their 2010 release, Fuzzy Dreams, featured melodic but fuzzy alt-rock antics, the two-track album teaser on the band’s Bandcamp finds them evolving their sound, especially on the nearly proggy, “Electric Heart” that shifts between sweet harmonies and aggressive screams over thunderous riffage. Also set to rock faces are Boston’s gritty rockers Crinkle Face, riff-punks T’Bone and psych-rockers GULL. (Richard Giraldi)

8:00 p.m. Saturday, 3/17. The Beerics.

SUNDAY

JAPAN NITE
Japan Nite returns to Chicago, this time at the Double Door, to give exposure to visiting Japanese musicians. Headliners ZZZ’s create throbbing post-punk jams with driving, hypnotic bass lines and a swirling drum beats. It’s heavy, yet light enough to get your head bouncing. Also appearing are indie poppers Nokies! The complete opposite of ZZZ’s, Nokies! specializes in dreamy, upbeat pop rock tunes that will leave a smile on your face. Also appearing are performance artists Kao=s. (Audrey Leon)

7:30 p.m. Sunday, 3/18. Double Door. 21+ $10.
