Chicago’s CAVE provided a must needed adrenaline shot to Pitchfork Music Festival on Sunday morning. If there was one complaint about the Friday and Saturday’s schedules, aside from Liars set on Friday afternoon, there wasn’t much in terms of big, noisy, riffy rock. Luckily, even after a 15 minute delay to start the set because of the early afternoon downpour that caught everyone by surprise, CAVE plugged in and chugged away with their psych-leabing, prog-rock antics, which thrilled the crowd at the Balance stage. Here’s a video of the band performing their song “Teenager” from their latest release, Pure Moods. Also, be sure and catch the band on Saturday, August 7, at the Hideout. :

Tomorrow begins another Pitchfork Music Festival at Chicago’s Union Park. From Saturday’s LCD Soundsystem disco-punk dance party to Sunday night’s Pavement reunion, this one should be pretty freakin’ amazing. But of course you know all about those guys, and there’s so much more music to be seen before 8:30pm that we decided to focus on our favorite mid-tier acts, and perhaps through our clever turns of phrase, guide you in their direction as well. This is your Loud Loop Press Pitchfork Fest 2010 Preview.

Finally, the start of Chicago’s summer festival season is upon us as the Do-Division Street Fest kicks off tomorrow! Lets just hope the rain doesn’t spoil the fun.

Let’s call it even on Cave’s latest EP, Pure Moods. They’ve smoothed out the rough edges of their earlier EP’s – a process started on their first full-length, Psychic Psummer – and calmed down the occasional hysterical vocals. For fans, this will probably seem like a mixed bag. But Pure Moods still delivers three exceptional tunes built around a new, calmer, and cleaner sound that screams “maturity”, although might be more rooted in comfort. We can debate the merits of this, but once the shock of a possibly mature Cave has settled, there’s no doubt listeners can learn to enjoy what the band is doing in the present and not dwell too much on the past.

Three I’m-not-sure-you-realize-how-hard-it-is-to-come-up-with-a-non-sequitur-a-day reasons to don your finest faded blue jeans and ratty old flannel and hit up the Hideout tonight…

1. I really want to describe Baltimore’s Arbouretum as Bonnie Prince Billy fronting Sunn0))), mostly because I’d go see that band in a heart beat. They are definitely grungier than most of their folk-y contemporaries, but that just points us towards Crazy Horse-lead Neil Young. A very fine comparison it is. Still, there is something darker and, dare I say, evil lurking in their songs. Doom folk? Fuck yeah. They site both Gordon Lightfoot and Earth as influences on their Myspace so maybe I’m not as crazy as I seem.

Permanent Records first Record Store Day exclusive features a song by two side projects: Chicago’s Bitchin Bajas, a Cave side project, and San Francisco’s Moon Duo, spawned from Wooden Shjips. Both bands specialize in three things: repetition, repetition, and repetition. But On this seven inch split, they take very different approaches.
