January is usually a stacked months for music in Chicago as we need something to take our minds off the frigid conditions and dying Christmas trees on the curb, and this beginning of 2011 is no different. From big names such as Weezer and Wu-Tang Clan to up-and-coming locals such as Secret Colours and Chaperone, this weekend has a little bit for everyone.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

FRIDAY

WEEZER
Weezer, the original nerds of alternative rock, will be giving Chicago a double dose of “Memories” as they round out their tour with two sold out nights at Aragon Ballroom. The post –grunge gods will be taking us back to the old school by playing the entire The Blue Album tonight and the entire Pinkerton tomorrow night. After plenty of nostalgia from the good ol’ days, the band will keep on rocking with a selection of other songs from their catalog. So, Chicago, don your emo goggles, Dickies and tacky sweaters for two nights of 90’s music bliss. (Britni Day)

6:30 p.m. Friday, 1/7. Aragon. All Ages. SOLD OUT.

HOSPITAL GARDEN
If you like your alternative rock on the Dinosaur Jr-side, Hospital Garden is right up your alley. The Chicago, by way of Ohio, group released its self-titled debut album last year and is once again ready to subject your ears to its goodness. Local rockers Unmanned Ship will headline. (Audrey Leon)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 1/7. Pancho’s. 21+

CHAPERONE
Chicago’s jangly, lo-fi indie rockers Chaperone will take the stage at Hideout tonight. The vivacious sex/quintet (depending on the day) put on one of those shows that guarantee to have you clapping your hands and stomping your feet. Also gracing the stage is Chicago’s quirky singer/songwriter sweetheart Ami Saraiya and lo-fi, fuzzy blues/alt-country rocker Transmontane. (Britni Day)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 1/7. The Hideout. 21+. $8.

BRIGHT RED LINE
West suburban Chicago post-punk rockers Bright Red Line hit up everyone’s favorite dank urinal, the Mutiny, with a mission to get everyone in attendance to dance to its mix of catchy rock beats. Oh, and if you’re not doing anything, our friends Rodeo will be making a special appearance. You don’t want to miss the unbridled fury, the rock-and/or-roll hoochie coo that is Rodeo live. It’s not unlike watching a pissed off bull kick a couple of clowns to death in a sandy arena. (Audrey Leon)

9:00 p.m. Friday, 1/7. The Mutiny. 21+ FREE!

SATURDAY

GA’AN
Sometimes one just wants simple, straightforward pop songs for a simple straightforward evening. Well, this show is not going to give you simpletons what you need. Ga’an require your patience. Indulge them, if you will. For, you see, they wish to take you on a magical journey of heavy bass, spacey guitars and keyboards, and chant-like vocals. Sounds good, right? As for the Violent ARP Band? Well they want to bludgeon you and your poor ears. Here’s to a night of difficult listening. (Ross Meyerson)

9:00 p.m. Saturday, 1/8. The Hideout. 21+. $8.

EMPIRES
Chicago alterna-poppers Empires released their second album Bang in 2010. The album showcases Empires’ ability to create extremely polished epic rock compositions with sweeping melodies and heavy emotional backbeats. If they are half the band live that they appear on record, this should be an amazing show. (Audrey Leon)

7:00 p.m. Saturday, 1/8. Lincoln Hall. All Ages. $12

WU-TANG CLAN
The influential, kung-fu rapping hip-hop group is back on the road with The Rebirth Tour. While the group’s 1993 collaborative effort, 36 Chambers, is still regarded at one of the genre’s absolute highlights, after its release, the group saw the death of one of their members (Ol’ Dirty Bastard), a slew of solo releases and controversy with everyone from B.I.G. to Mase. But GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa (minus RZA, who is busy) are back together and will undoubtedly “Bring da motherfuckin’ ruckus” to the Congress on Saturday night. (Richard Giraldi)

7:30 p.m. Saturday, 1/8. Congress Theatre. SOLD OUT.

SECRET COLOURS
Chicago’s psychedelic pop-rockers, who were just named in the Chicago Tribune’s 11 local bands for 2011, have found a pretty clever way to promote a show – they simply released a rad new single two days prior! They hit the Subterranean for an early show on Saturday with local art-rockers Apteka and Indianapolis’ melodic grime rockers We Are Hex. (Richard Giraldi)

6:00 p.m. Saturday, 1/8. Subterranean. All Ages. $10.

THE RECORD LOW
Looking for some meticulously crafted songsmanship? Are you looking for me to keep making up words? Great. Here’s The Record Low, and their downer pop. Even when these guys pick up the pace as they do on “Under The Rust” there is still a heavy melancholy lingering. Still, some of the best pop songs bums you the fuck out and this is well done pop willing to bring you down. Sissy Mena has gotten the review treatment from the semi-reliable Richard Giraldi , so my work there is done. Stephen Paul Smoker opens. (Ross Meyerson)

10:30 p.m. Saturday, 1/8. Subterranean. 21+. $8.

SOFT TARGETS
Formed from a few of the ashes from the late great Seam, Soft Targets shun the glacial pace of their former band and follow a more peppy path. Call it rock ‘n’ roll. Seeking something more countrified? Look no further than Via Verso, who remind me of Sebadoh covering The Flying Burrito Brothers. I can say whatever I want! Feel free to check out the Heavy Bombers and Victory Auto Rockers while you’re at it. Homework! (Ross Meyerson)

9:00 p.m. Saturday, 1/8. Panchos. 21+. $5.

SUNDAY

GLASS DICKS
Don’t let the name “Glass Dicks” fool you. This suburban Chicago four-piece is all about class. Take for example their song “Drew Peterson.” To some it could be a much needed reminder that no one should date/marry/fuck Drew Peterson, to others it could be an OKCupid dating profile. Either way, it’s genius. The band balances a Henry Rollins-esque vocal hard and fast punk rock chaos. (Audrey Leon)

9:00 p.m., Sunday, 1/9. Double Door. 21+. $5

Rock’s most tolerable supergroup, Them Crooked Vultures, rocked the Aragon last night and seemed to be in high spirits. Frontman and guitarist extraordinaire Joshua Homme proclaimed Chicago the band’s hometown and made a few chuckle-worthy quips such as, “I’m not Tony Robbins, but I am drunk!” as he gulped down a bottle of vodka. Equally impressive were rhythm guitarist Alain Johannes, formerly of Eleven and QOTSA, and Dave Grohl who sounded and looked fantastic behind the kit. Even the legendary John Paul Jones looked ever like the rock elder statesman by shredding on a variety of basses and even showcased his piano skills. At times, the Aragon sound turned their heavy riffage into a treble-filled garble, but the band’s energy outshined any audio problems. Here’s a clip from the show of TCV performing “New Fang” from Youtuber takealeft2. Enjoy:

Whether or not the crowd was fully prepared for the event at hand, The Pixies certainly were, delivering a performance worthy of their legend and of the landmark record on display. The sound, appropriately, was simply enormous.

The Pixies took the stage Friday night at the Aragon Ballroom to perhaps the most adoring crowd I have ever stood in. I mention this because it’s interesting to see a band play to a group of people who just a few months earlier would never dream that they’d be standing where they were, seeing a band of such magnitude playing an album of such importance.

As with My Bloody Valentine on the same stage a little over a year ago, it was a surreal experience that was somewhat difficult to fathom, even as it was happening. Maybe I was just too awestruck by the spectacle at hand or maybe, just maybe, this often troubled and messy band came out and delivered a flawless performance to complement the material. From where I was standing I detected nary a single hiccup or deficiency the whole night, not that I was expecting such imperfections.

As promised, the band started out by running through a handful of Doolittle B-sides that, as fans know, are about as awesome as B-sides come. Though obvious second tier Pixies material, songs like “Manta Ray” and “Weird At My School” can hang with most bands’ ‘A’ material, and served as a great warm up to (and later cool down from) the main event.

As soon as Kim Deal plucked the opening notes of “Debaser” the crowd went wild and the energy level never seemed to dip as the band ran through the entire album without pausing much at all. Indeed, I can’t recall frontman Frank Black uttering a word the entire night other than a couple “thank yous” and only Kim offered the occasional quip regarding the performance and the set’s progress.

The band seemed to be mostly all business, but it was obvious that they were enjoying themselves. It might’ve been nice to get a little bit in the way of commentary from the people behind an album as incredible as Doolitle as it was being played, as some insight into the music could have been really interesting, but the band chose to let the music speak for itself, which was just fine. There was no self-congratulating or introspection, even though such indulgences have been more than earned and would have been tolerated.

Every track sounded amazing live, and the presentation was awesome as well. Clips from Un chien andalou, the surrealist film that Francis cites as a major inspiration for the album provided a great intro, and the videos playing in the background, ranging from abstract clips to footage of the band, did a fine job of accentuating the experience.

As an added treat, there were two encores featuring more excellent B sides and a few classic cuts from elsewhere in the Pixies catalog like “Velouria” and “U-Mass,” all of which sounded equally as awesome as the Doolittle material.

The show was an unqualified success, showcasing a band still able to tear it up in a live setting. The album being celebrated certainly deserved an epic performance and the Pixies delivered, and I hope they see fit to perform their other classics at some point.

The music still deserves to be heard in a live setting, and the Pixies proved Friday night that they are still more than capable of delivering a phenomenal live performance.

1. Pixies will be honoring the 20th anniversary of their classic 1989 record Doolittle by performing the record in its entirety plus b-sides like “Bailey’s Walk” and “Into the White.”

2. There’s a good chance you’ll hear cuts from other Pixies’ records, such as “Something Against You,” “Nimrod’s Son” and “Where is my Mind,” which appeared during the Pixies’ second encore at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, Colorado, on Nov. 16.

3. Like a comet or a meteor shower, the Pixies only come around every couple of years. And while they may never record another record, it doesn’t mean we can take a night (or three) to appreciate what was. For instance, check out this video of the Pixies performing “Debaser” from Lollapalooza 2005 in Chicago.

Who knew animated characters could be this loud? The fictional metal group Dethklok from Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse obliterated a sold out crowd at the Aragon Ballroom with insanely heavy, lightening fast riffs and tounge-in-cheek lyrics last Saturday night. But it was their tour mates and prog-metal gods Mastodon who gave a performance filled with more heavy hits and explosions than a Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner cartoon.

The double headliner thing can always get a bit awkward. Two huge bands but only one headlining spot. But it gets even more weird when the headliner is a fictional band from a cartoon. But Dethklok played the part well, and their video screen showing scenes from the show really helped push the idea that these guys were real. Still, Mastodon was the night’s highlight by a long shot playing a mesmerizing set that included their newest bombastic effort Crack The Skye in its entirety.

What makes Mastodon so impressive is that they’ve reached nearly classic metal band status while being a relatively young group. Crack The Skye is metal, but metal rooted in the heaviness of classic rock acts such as Zeppelin, Floyd or Deep Purple. And the band even performs with the exact precision as those same former greats.

This was the second time Mastodon have performed Crack The Skye in it’s entirety in Chicago, the first being last May at the Metro, and this performance was even tighter. The band really hit their stride during the mid-section of the 11-minute “The Czar” when big power riffs give way to a almost-funky bass-heavy bridge. Bassist Troy Sanders leaned back with his bass hung low and belted out a deep grunt before delivering his vocal section.

The intricacies of guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher’s collaborative riffage can’t be understated, and drummer Brann Dailor’s punk meets sludge meets jazz rhythms lift the songs to epic heights. The band’s encore consisted of a range of older material including the twisted “Circle Of Cysquatch” off 2006′s Blood Mountain and the heavy-as-all-fuck “Mother Puncher” from 2002′s Remission. After closing with an almost-as-good-as-the-original cover of The Melvins’ tune “The Bit,” the tinnitus began to set in, but there was no rest for the weary on this night.

Shortly before Dethklok hit the stage, the crowd began chanting “Dethklok!” and threw fists in the air as if the animated characters from part-American/part-Scandinavian death metal were literally about to walk on the stage. I’ll be honest, I’m not a big fan of Metalocalypse. Infact, I’m more of a Home Movies type of fellow, but Dethklok’s seemingly cult following really peaked my interest.

After a short opening video featuring a gag about Dethklok fans being languid mutants, the band hit the stage. Unfortunately, the only cartoon characters anywhere to be seen were on the video backdrop. The actual Dethklok consists of drummer Gene Hoglan, guitarist Mike Keneally, bassist Bryan Beller and lead guitarist, vocalist and Metalocalypse creator Brendon Small, who plays the part of Dethklok’s monstrous front man Nathan Explosion quite well.

The concept is that the live band plays to a bunch of quickly edited music videos featuring characters and scenes from the animated show that are projected on the screen behind them. It really seems to take the pressure off the musicians because most of the crowd were fixated on the violent images before them, leaving the band cool, collected and smiling as they deliver nearly grinding metal songs one after another.

Unfortunately, the fun of a Dethklok show only lasts for a few minutes and ultimately becomes gimmicky. The songs are metal, sure, but some of the takes are obviously jabs at the genre. Take the selection, “Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle,” which features a jackhammer-like double bass drum, sludgey riff and Iron Maiden-esque solo, but the lyrics, sung in a deep growl, are about coffee and why it’s so awesome. It’s cute and quite a few Chicagoland tweens enjoy it, but the question remained: Why are these guys headlining over Mastodon?

But at the end of the night, it was apparent that the show was simply a celebration of heavy metal. Old, young, older, younger all came out to hear big distorted riffs and insanely fast drums. Lets just hope that the younger breed of metal fans realize that great metal doesn’t have to be animated.

The Doolittle tour hits Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom on November 20 and 21. Tickets go on sale September 12 at ticketmaster.com.

UPDATE: Per WindyCityRock.net, The Pixies have added a third show on Thursday November 19 at the Aragon Ballroom to their already two-date Chicago stop. Tickets for the added date will go on sale October 24 at Ticketmaster.com. Additionally, WindyCityRock reports show opener information:

Bad Lieutenant, the new project from Bernard Sumner of New Order and Joy Division, will open the November 19 show. No Age will support on November 20 and Jay Reatard on November 21.

The set list will feature not only Doolittle tracks but all the album’s related B-sides.

I’m still amazed that the band have managed to work through the tension seen in their 2004 reunion tour documentary loudQUIETloud for yet another tour. But it’s The fucking Pixies, so who cares? Just give me my “Debaser.”
