They are fantastic live. Extremely fan friendly, lots of banter. And their library of songs is so diverse it’s difficult to not find something you’ll enjoy.

Nice review AK. Looking forward to getting my hands on the album. Anyone out there want to speak to what th are like live?
They are playing out here in Seattle in a couple of weeks the same night as another one of Andy’s favorite bands and I am trying to decide what to do.

struck a chord, richard? nice word choice. and let’s see: unfamiliar with polvo, not much of a built to spill fan, never had yo la tengo strike a chord…it’s time to get you up to speed on a little indie rock history. and dan can hold my hand into the present day scene. or we can stubbornly stick to what we know and as a collection create one well rounded music fan

Anyone going to see them at the Vic on Tuesday? I saw tickets are still available. Yo La Tengo never really struck the right chord with me, but the review makes me want to see this material live. The first song that I really enjoyed at their Pitchfork 2009 performance was “Periodically Double Or Triple.”

I’ve often skipped to the last 3 tracks and just listened to them, especially on my train ride to work in the mornings.
Then I’ll start the album proper for the train ride home when I’m more awake and alert.
I love that you can do that, but still the album as whole holds up as a complete work.

i think you alleviated my fears, andy. and it kind of sounds like a perfect vinyl pick up in that one can almost listen to the last few tunes as an album unto themselves. that can be the one drawback of cd’s: 70+ minute albums are hard to do in one sitting sometimes. and one hardly just skips tracks ahead on a cd. but it is so easy to throw on side 3.
