Saosin has a way of making their fans wait for new music. It has been three long years since their first, self-titled release and with their latest, In Search Of Solid Ground, the California-based quintet offers a new set of tunes that, while doesn’t stray drastically from their older material, still packs a punch.

This 13-song release, while not lacking in the riffs department, definitely has an unexpected, and at times, unfavorable softness to it that their 2006 self-titled debut lacked. “It’s All Over Now” showcases this softer side allowing, lead vocalist, Cove Reber’s unique voice to really shine through.

“Fireflies (Light Messengers)” is what really puts the record to sleep though. Clocking in at just over seven and a half minutes, it is the band’s longest song to date and features the light sound of piano at the beginning, building to include the force of the entire band.

It is clear that Saosin didn’t break any new ground with this record, but they did compose a solid and more produced sound that might intrigue first time listeners. With help from Alex Rodriguez on drums, “On My Own” and “Is This Real” are the two standouts most reminiscent of the more aggressive style that filled their first release with angst and harder sounds.

After such a long wait, how this softer side will affect Saosin’s live show will remain to be seen, but it should make for a nice mixture with their previous work. At any rate, Saosin is a group of talented musicians that put together a seemingly more mainstream record but are still very distinguishable.
