In nine days the music, tech (or interactive), and film worlds will begin to congregate in Austin, Texas for the most important ‘conference’ on Earth these days, South By Southwest (SXSW). All of them will be traveling to Austin with the hope of shaking, rattling, and stirring up their industry by making their phantasms reality. And The Hideout, who annually throws a benefit concert to help artists pay their way, will once again be sending off some of Chicago's best talent with a SXSW - Send Off Party on Saturday, March 9th. This year’s lineup includes a diverse and wide array of talent, from all sorts of genres. Enough differentiation to ebb and flow like the Guinness and whiskey that will inevitably pour that following week for St. Paddy's day. Kicking off the party will be Chicago's youthful lo-fi rockers Twin Peaks whose brash brand of garage will certainly reverberate all of Goose Island. Followed by the indie folk foursome Judson Claiborne whose new record is expected out this week. Next up, will be the soulful sounds of the octet, The Congregation, who recently wowed and wooed the audience at the Chicago Mixtape Fundraiser last weekend. Chicago veterans The Waco Brothers, fronted by former Mekons front man and XRT DJ Jon Langford, will bring their wise alt-country attitudes to the stage after Local H front man’s solo project, Scott Lucas & The Married Men. And after a long hiatus the Empty Bottle's former 'house band,' Frontier, who got back together in 2010, have put out delectable track after delectable track that has made this Loud Looper excited for more. Summer Girlfriends have been making waves over the last year with their brand of Indie Pop and when they take the stage at the Hideout they surely will remind us of why Chicago is the best coast. Multi-media electronic duo Mahogany will certainly dazzle with their introspective tunes. And if you are a fan of the razzmatazz of 1960s psych rock mixed with the more flowery side of the Black Lips, then you will not want to miss the must hear sounds of Outer Minds. And finally, to end out the night the rabble rousing mash-up duo The Hood Internet will be pouncing on the audience, demanding that they dance their way to SXSW with them. Tickets for The Hideout's Annual SXSW Send-Off will be available on the day of the show, Saturday March 9, at the door for $10. Find more information at HideoutChicago.com. By   \  1 comment

Whoa! I totally forgot it's still winter. But it is. And there's A LOT of snow on the ground. Still, don't let that keep you from some very rad shows going down this weekend. We're talking Panda Riot at the Hideout, High Art at the Bottle, Company Of Thieves at City Winery and more! Dig it...

FRIDAY

HIGH ART OK, i've never actually heard High Art. But what I do know is that it's a collaboration between James Francais Swanberg of the Today Shits and Kenny Alden of Magic Milk. Kenny will be behind the kit while Swanberg will be up front. Who knows if it'll sound more like the Today Shit's lo-fi folk or Milk's rough garage rock, but either way, I'm sure it'll rule. Also appealing are Country Mice and Birdcloud.(Richard Giraldi) 9:30 p.m. Friday, 2/22. The Empty Bottle. 21+ $10. PANDA RIOT Panda Riot's latest, Northern Automatic Music, is undeniably their best effort yet. It definitely showcases the band's tight focus as it seamlessly melds shoegaze with warbling indie pop. Whether it's the shimmering instrumental, "Golden Age," or the alt-era, noisy MBV hum of "Good Night, Rich Kids," it all works quite well. So, tonight, help Panda Riot celebrate the records release because they earned it. Also appearing are BigColour and Lightfoils.(Richard Giraldi) 10:00 p.m. Friday, 2/22. The Hideout. 21+ $8.

SATURDAY

GERONIMO! As someone who is generally lost in a swirling vat of 90s nostalgia, Chicago proggy indie rockers Geronimo! really speak to me. The band effortlessly combines sugary sweet melodic power pop harmonies with roaring, distorted guitar grooves, and dense drum beats to bring maximum heavy. Geronimo!'s 2012 album Exanimate weighs on the heart of this gal with wistful ripped up flannel memories. Also appearing tonight are Wisconsin's Dharmonic Deluxe, Chicago sludge-pop quarter Rodeo, and local punks Velocicopter. (Audrey Leon) 9:00 p.m. Saturday, 2/23. Township. 21+ $5.

SUNDAY

COMPANY OF THIEVES Chicago pop rockers Company of Thieves pack a tremendous amount of power behind their larger than life melodies and booming rhtyhms. Frontwoman Genevieve Schatz is a force to be reckoned with due to her lush, sultry vocals that easily surf between a deep bluesy whisper to exploding like a firecracker. Join the band for a special acoustic set featuring Schatz and Marc Walloch. (Audrey Leon) 8:00 p.m. Sunday, 2/24. City Winery. 21+ $15-20 By   \  comments
Peoples Temple of America aren't flashy. In fact, they may be the opposite of flashy. But what's most engaging about their music is that raw minimalism that's driven by a punk rock edge. The indie rock trio's steady, watery guitars are the perfect foil for Ben Leach's urgent delivery that will undoubtedly catch be attention of Japandroids and Titus Andronicus fans. "Outliers" is the first single from Peoples Temple of America's debut, "P.T.A.," which is due out today. Well, technically tonight at their Quencher's show. And though lyrically it's a bit mystical, the song is a fiery ball of emotional discharge. Download "Outliers" on Peoples Temple of America's Bandcamp or stream it after the jump. ___________________________________________________________________ PEOPLES TEMPLE OF AMERICA 9:00 p.m. Thursday, February 21. Quenchers, 2401 North Western Ave. 21+. $5. ___________________________________________________________________ By   \  comments
Indie rockers Maps & Atlases have released a new video for "Fever," the second single off their latest release, 2012's Beware and Be Grateful. The video features the main character from the band's cryptic Beware and Be Grateful promo video they released a couple months before its April release date. The character, or "man," seems to have become a wanderer with no general direction besides dancing and being stricken with wonderment by an orange. Ultimately, he seems zapped back into reality at the clip's conclusion. According to NPR, Maps & Atlas' guitarist Erin Elders, who directed the video, said, "Ultimately he (the "man") finds it's the small, human interactions that cure him." Watch the video and jam out to the song's airy and uber-melodic vibe below: httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rMWeHky_uc By   \  comments
As we reported last month, Harmonica Dunn, (AKA Donnie Biggins) of Chicago folk rockers The Shams Band, took it upon himself to create a three-day festival devoted entirely to Americana and folk music. Dunn Dunn Fest spreads itself across Chicago's Lincoln Park and Lakeview neighborhoods this February 20-22, featuring a fine collection of local, semi-local and out of town folk acts. Loud Loop Press picks three acts to check out this week at Dunn Dunn Fest.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, TONIC ROOM

MICHELE MCGUIRE In spite of her youth, singer-songwriter Michele McGuire is deep down, an old soul. McGuire's voice is both sweet and a little raspy when she sings in the gorgeous low-tones presented on her second album Mid-western, which came out last fall. The album does an excellent job of intermingling twangy bluegrass ballads ("Mama Can't Save Me Now") and upbeat odes that incorporate fun pop melodies ("One Too Many"). There's a lot of sly wisdom hanging around, if you're ready to listen.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, SCHUBAS

GRANDKIDS Champaign-Urbana quartet Grandkids lean more toward sleepy indie pop, but the band can create some heavenly melodies that evoke movement from breezy swaying ("Where's My Tribe") to out-right head-bobbing ("Ethylene"). Look for the band to release new material soon.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, LINCOLN HALL

SAM DOORES + RILEY DOWNING & THE TUMBLEWEEDS New Orleans sextet Sam Doores + Riley Downing & The Tumbleweeds specialize in old, old country style. The kind of honky-tonk music that you'd imagine would be playing in a black and white movie where the protagonist orders a sasparilla just before being shot by an out of town outlaw. The Tumbleweeds aren't about drama, though, the band also creates some swinging 50s-style rock and roll like "Depression Blues" that is wall-to-wall harmonica and pure groove. Check the band out before they head out on tour with Alabama Shakes.
http://youtu.be/01oImX9AvKw Single day passes are $10; a three-day pass is only $25. For more information including Dunn Dunn Fest's full line up, please visit Dunn Dunn Fest's Facebook page. By   \  comments
