Boo. Yeah, it’s Halloween weekend. You know what that means. Kids decked out in costumes asking for candy and Adults decked out in costumes asking the cop to drop the DUI charge. It’s like St. Patrick’s day without all that irish crap.
Before we get to our picks for top weekend shows, a reminder: Loud Loop Radio will once again grace the intertubes tomorrow, Saturday, October 31, at 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. CST on Radio DePaul. It will be our Halloween show. We’ll be talking scary songs. Ohhhh! So be sure to tune in before you head off into the night for all sorts of rainy Chicago debauchery.
Let’s get to it, shall we?
Bob Dylan
Dylan returns to Chicago with a three night stop at the Aragon Ballroom including a Halloween show. Unfortunately, the scariest thing about the show might be how horribly Dylan’s voice has aged over the years. Still, he’s a legend, and it’s always fun to hear him mumble his way through “Like A Rolling Stone.” – Richard Giraldi
7:30 PM. Friday, 10/30 & Saturday 10/31. Aragon Ballroom. $52.50.
Chromeo
This Montreal based duo’s image and electrofunk music is sex-saturated and reminiscent of all things 80’s. And if Halloween isn’t the perfect opportunity for P-Thugg (keyboards, synth, talk box) and Dave 1 (guitar and lead vocals) to go all out, I don’t know what is. Not into the 80’s? Then you should at least check them out to see what they call “the only successful Arab/Jew partnership since the dawn of human culture.” – Shelby Blitz
7:00 PM. Friday, 10/30. Congress Theatre. 17+. SOLD OUT.
Monsters Of Folk
Literally a four-headed monster consisting of Conor Oberst, Jim James, M Ward and Mike Mogis, Monsters of Folk is like a modern, indie rock updated Traveling Wilburys. Don’t be turned off by the name, however, as the album presents folk as more of a vibe than a musical genre as it spans hip-hip, alt-country and southern rock. According to the press release the show, “will be a 2 1/2 hour musical event showcasing brand new songs…as well as songs fans have come to enjoy from their respective Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket and M Ward catalogues.” Sweet. – Richard Giraldi
7:30 PM. Friday, 10/30 Auditorium Theatre. $36.00 – $51.00.
Dan Deacon
A typical Dan Deacon show features loads of twisted chipmunk vocals, flashing lights, and a pulsating green skull, so obviously it’s a perfect Halloween show. Doesn’t a sweaty, frenetic dance party full of awesome tunes sound better than a haunted house anyways? – Dan Henshaw
8:00 PM. Friday, 10/30. Logan Square Auditorium. $10.
Roky Erickson
Honestly, this guy has always played eerie sounding music so what better night to see him. – Ross Meyerson
8:00 PM. Saturday, 10/31. Bottom Lounge. 21+. $20.
Scotland Yard Gospel Choir Benefit
This was supposed to be their homecoming show in support of And The Horse You Rode In On. Instead BBU, New Duncan Imperials, Canasta, and Kevin Flynn and the Avondale Ramblers will be playing a benefit for SYGC. It’ll do you some good to help out.- Ross Meyerson
8:30 PM. Saturday, 10/31. Subterranean. 17+. $10.
Lawrence Peters Outfit
Odds are you were going out drinking so why not get some free country music with that drink. If they aren’t dressed like cowboys then you know they’ve got costumes on.- Ross Meyerson
10:00 PM. Saturday, 10/31. California Clipper. 21+. FREE!
