Kurt Vile

If you are reading this, it means you survived Chicago Snowpocalypse ‘10. Congratulations. That means you just won yourself a chance to catch some great shows this weekend.

Before we get to the shows, a reminder that Loud Loop Radio will be back on the air tomorrow, Saturday, February 13, at 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Radio DePaul.

Lets get to it, shall we?

WELCOME TO ASHELY
Chicago’s Welcome To Ashley skew towards the melodic, jangle-y guitar side of music spectrum. But don’t let the fuzzy chord strums fool you. WTA have a very mature sound that recalls Singles soundtrack era Paul Westerberg and R.E.M. from the I.R.S. years. Tonight, they’re rocking the Empty Bottle along with Chicago alt-rockers I Lost Control and local indie power pop outfit The Handcuffs. (Richard Giraldi)

10:00 PM. Friday, 2/12. Empty Bottle. 21+. $10.

FUCKED UP & KURT VILE
Admittedly I’m not sure the logistics of this but Saturday you have two, yes two, chances to see Fucked Up and Kurt Vile. First they play the Viaduct Theater then apparently pack up and head on over to the Empty Bottle for round two. Should make for an interesting evening for them. For you, well, you can make your decision on whether you want to get to bed early or stay up late like a grown up. Sadly, I know my answer. (Ross Meyerson)

9:30 PM. Saturday, 2/13. Viaduct Theatre. $12.
10:00 PM. Saturday, 2/13. Empty Bottle. 21+. $12.

HIDEOUT MAKEOUT PARTY!
Ok lovers, it’s that time of year. Show the world how grossly in love you are by heading to the Hideout for the 4th annual Makeout Party. There’s almost too much goodness to list, but here’s just a smattering: The Makeout Party Orchestra, made up of members of Mucca Pazza, Detholz!, Baby Teeth, and Lamajamal, will be showering you with some originals, soundtrack classics, and love songs galore from such lovely lovers as Frank Zappa, Herb Alpert, The Ventures and, as they say, many many more. DJ’s Mistress of Sultry Sound and Mitch Cocanig will be spinning tunes to keep you lovebirds staring lovingly into each others lovely eyes. And so much more! Isn’t it just so great to be alive and in love? Yes! (Ross Meyerson)

9:00 PM. Saturday, 2/13. The Hideout. 21+ $12.

LAWRENCE PETERS OUTFIT
It’s about time you got on over to the California Clipper don’t you think? Well friends, why not saddle on up to the bar Saturday and get yourself an earful of the world famous Lawrence Peters Outfit. From 10pm to 2:30am you’ll get 4, yes 4, sets of some of the grandest honky tonk this side of wherever grand honky tonk normally resides. Struggling with feeding the family? Is the big city banker trying to take away your farm? Don’t sweat it. This here show is free. Need I say more? (Ross Meyerson)

10:30 PM. 2/13. California Clipper. 21+. FREE!!!

LEFT TURN AT ALBUQUERQUE
If you’re looking for some good old acoustic folk rock, Jeff Churchwell and his gorgeous tenor voice will be playing with his newest band, Left Turn at Albuquerque, at Lilly’s on Saturday. Churchwell (founder of Hawk From A Handsaw) is a prominent part of Chicago’s acoustic scene and has played an endless list of venues never ceasing to leave audiences breathless with his heavenly voice and talent with numerous stringed instruments including 6 and 12 string guitar and banjo. Left Turn At Albuquerque includes an impressive lineup of singer/songwriter acoustic folk musicians that will make for a beautiful edition to Lilly’s line up on Saturday. So, if you’re looking for a quiet night of folk music, then head on over to Lilly’s on Saturday night. (Britni Day)

8:00 PM. Saturday, 2/13. Lilly’s. 21+ $6.

YAWN
If there has been one band that’s truly impressed me so far in 2010, it’s Chicago’s YAWN. Their latest EP was an amazingly produced set of energetic electro-dance loop goodness. Their sound is very reminiscent of Animal Collective and Sigur Ros, but the songs feel much more fleshed out. Opening the show, which is a steal for only $3, are local psychedelic pop group Netherfriends. So if you’re still deciding how to spend your Valentine’s Day, looks like we just figured out your plans for you. (Richard Giraldi)

9:00 PM. 2/14. Empty Bottle. 21+. $3.
