The Cathy Santonies

Chicago rockers The Cathy Santonies and local punks Vortis will release a new 7″ split on July 1 titled Rock N Roll Belongs to Everyone.

Cathy Santonies singer Radio Santoni said in an email to Loud Loop Press that the members of Vortis came to the Santonies with the album idea.

“We thought about it for like 30 seconds and then we were all ‘Yeah!’,” Santoni said. “Vortis is a pretty no-nonsense punk rock-style band, and so Santonies were seeing this as a totally punk rock 7″. So we chose our songs appropriately.”

Santoni said that the split contains a cover of the X-Ray Spex song “Oh Bondage! Up Yours!” covered by Vortis and featuring Radio on vocals. The record also includes a new version of the previously released Cathy Santonies song “Maybe She’s Born with it,” featuring new drummer Chip.

“We chose the songs out of our canon based on how f’ing punk rock they are,” Santoni said. “The stuff we’re writing now is a little less punk and a little more nuanced or complex.”

The Cathy Santonies and Vortis will hold a record release party at Panchos on July 1 to celebrate the split. Those who purchase the vinyl will also receive a free digital download.

In addition to live performances, The Cathy Santonies will debut a music video, shot by friend Jacqueline Mary, for “Maybe She’s Born With It” at Panchos.
