And now three reasons to crawl out of the basement and in to The Beauty Bar tonight…
1. Chicago’s edition of Future Sounds’ Rumble returns to the Beauty Bar tonight. After venue jumping the past few months, it looks like this might be the event’s permanent home. I mean third time’s a charm, right? Anyway, tonight’s lineup couldn’t be a better one to debut at (hopefully) The Rumble’s new residence. One of our 11 Chicago Bands To Watch In 2011, Yawn headline tonight and have been impressing us since 2010 with their lush, electro-tinged psychedelic pop. Sure, on the surface it’s quite reminiscent of major acts such as Animal Collective or Yeasayer, but what keeps Yawn separated from the rest of the pack is their keen sense of a good hook and ability to add in touches of quirky humor (exemplified in their “Kind Of Guy” video). We’re still waiting for the official follow-up to their debut EP, but expect to hear some new tuneage in their highly entertaining live set.
2. Distractions brand of dreamy pop is strangely addicting. Is it the eerie keyboards, the warm guitars, the off-kilter rhythms or the sleepy vocals? Actually, it’s all of those things coming together at just the right angle that give the band a certain vastness to their sound. But don’t take my word for it, check out their session with the always great Giant System Chicago for visual and audial proof.
3. Finally, opening tonight is Campfires – the primary musical vehicle for Chicago experimental musician John Wall. And it shows in the music, which has touches of lofi folk, spastic experimentalism and jangly garage rock (particularly on the track “Dusty Manions”). At times Campfires sounds warm and comforting, while at others it gets ragged with a rough-around-the-edges feel.
9:00 p.m. Wednesday, 6/22. Beauty Bar. 21+. FREE with RSVP at Eventbrite!
