Sunken Ships

And now three reasons to get out of this lovely weather and into a small, dark bar to hear some righteous music…

1. Sunken Ships are by no means new to the Chicago scene. It’s the project from former Sybris drummer Eric Mahle, but also features members from My Cold Dead Hand, Quatre Tete and Muchacha. On the band’s Myspace page, they site SST Records and The ’90s in their influenced, and by golly, that sounds just about right. Their crooked, guitar-leaning sound is poppy at times, but also rugged and melancholy. It will definitely transport you back to a time when 120 Minutes was still cool, but still sounds genuine and not an intentionaly throwback.

2. What began as a power trio featuring Wade Work, Dan Wagner, Tim Jepsen, Chicago’s Sequoia added Cully Johnston of site favorites Powers as their fourth member not too long ago. The result is a massive, overdriven guitar attack – but not one that’s overly abrasive. Once again, this band also draws from ’90s influences such as Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth with guitars, bass and rapid-fire percussion all up in your face. In short, Sequoia fucking rock.

3. Finally, lest we forget The Ladies & Gentlemen. They dabble more in Cars-esque, vocal-heavy, new wave pop than the guitar-focused, ’90s influences of the other bands performing. But you know what, it works just as well. The synths are subtle as so not overtake the lightning leads and the drums are super punchy. It’s fun, catchy but doesn’t sacrifice it’s edge. Pretty rad, no?
