Three, count them, three, I’ve-been-babying-my-face-too-much-recently-and-maybe-it-could-use-a-little-shredding reasons to scoot on over to the Lincoln Hall tonight…

1. L.A.’s Red Sparowes are what one might call a supergroup of sorts. You’ll find current or ex-members of heavy hitters Isis, Halifax Pier, Pleasure Forever, Angel Hair and The VSS. You’ll hear sprawling, massive instrumental songs that sometimes wash over you and other times go straight for the face melting, often times within the same tune. Fans of Pelican and Russian Circles take note, this will totally float your boat. Here’s a video of Red Sparowes live at the Knitting Factory in L.A. in ’06:

2. As much as I hate fantasy in book and film form, I usually dig it to no end in metal form. The sweetly named Caspian, hailing from the mythical Beverly, Mass., maybe don’t sound fantastical musically but…that name. Rad. Their metal meets post-rock meets post-metal instrumentals are at times a swirling mass of goodness and at times downright pretty, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

3. Then there’s Brooklyn’s Fang Island. Again with Brooklyn I said there would be 3 reasons today and I always fulfill my promises. Well, they don’t sound like Red Sparowes or Caspian, that’s for sure. They sound like a proggy Vampire Weekend or something.

9 p.m. Wednesday, 4/21. Lincoln Hall. 21+. $12.
