percolator
Three any-day-that-begins-with-The-Melvins’-Houdini-is-a-great-day reasons to truck it on over to Beat Kitchen tonight…
1. Chicago quartet Percolator pumps out plenty of quirky indie rock that smoothly transfers from bouncy pop to slow folk rock compositions on its latest album None of These are Words, which is available for free download via its bandcamp page. There are plenty of influences rolling around in the mix, but They Might Be Giants seems to stick out the most. And that always spells fun.
2. The world needs more dream pop done well. You can really hear the influence of bands like The Jesus and the Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine on Chicago quintet Future Ghosts. The group plays with desperate pop urgency while maintaining an aloof space rock exterior. Future Ghosts are the perfect soundtrack for lying around and watching the clouds pass.
3. Local quintet Charming People have a swinging throwback sound. In another day and age, they’d fit in nicely with 60s girl groups who specialize in sugary sweet pop with a hint of darkness behind the veil. Excellent music to slow dance to. Headliners Rodeo have been called a lot of things: “sludge pop,” “post-punk” and “those guys over there, officers” but the reality is, you just have to see the band for yourself. There’s definitely some Bleach-era Nirvana running through the band’s veins, but there’s also plenty of 70s classic rock buried deep within their psyches and maybe some Mike Patton hiding in their closets. Full disclosure: LLP editor Richard Giraldi plays guitar and sometimes bass in Rodeo.
8:00 p.m. Thursday, 9/8. Beat Kitchen. 21+ $8.
