1. Panda Riot really impressed me with their latest release Far & Near. The band have pretty much perfected their dreamy, lush synth and drum machine-driven pop. But what made Far & Near so impressive were it’s little subtleties and nuances that gave the music some very heavy undertones. Better yet, apparently member Rebecca Scott has a new amp to melt your face with.
2. Sissy Mena will also rock the Subterranean tonight. While Panda Riot are more dreamy and rich, Sissy Mena are more rooted in the early ’90s alt-rock guitar era as I pointed out in my review of their EP Young Girl. Their shoegaze sensibility is really pushed to the edge with guitarist Tyler Brinegar’s ripping solos.
3. Finally, we reach Apteka who are probably the heaviest band on the tonight’s bill. Their sound combines fuzzed out riffage with the sensibility of early Smashing Pumpkins-esque psychedelia. It’s quite something that this show can feature three bands that admit their shoegaze-influenced roots but all have distinctly different sounds. Yay for rock music.
8:00 p.m. Thursday, 6/10. Subterranean. 21+. $8.
