Ortolan
Three I-love-a-man-in-a-uniform-but-that’s-neither-here-nor-there reasons to check out Panchos tonight…
1. New Jersey pop group Ortolan certainly likes to keep it all in the family. The band consists of three sisters and one sister-in-law who trade easy breezy pop harmonies in the vein of 50s girl groups. In more modern terms, the lovely ladies that comprise Ortolan carry themselves in a Regina Spektor meets Eisley and Tegan & Sara kind of way. Anyway you describe it, the music these – probably too young to remember the “Partridge Family” – women make is as sweet as teenage puppy love.
2. Chicago’s own dance rockers Bring Your Ray Gun will provide a nice contrast to this rather laidback showcase with some feisty vocal distortion, wacky synths and funky bass lines. Bright Your Ray Gun’s music contains trace elements of electro-rock groups like The Faint and Gang of Four. If photos of past shows mean anything, the members of Bring Your Ray Gun love strutting around in their undies. Nothing says dance party like colorful briefs.
3. An electric folk band? It’s about time. McHenry, Illinois, quintet Evoli capture a listener’s intrigue with major guitar licks dominating the twinkling piano notes and dueling male/female harmonies. Rounding out the showcase will be the jazzy pop stylings of singer-songwriter Kristin Cotts & What About Rosalind.
8:00 p.m. Thursday, 6/16. Panchos. All Ages. $10.
