On again Off Again
1. Chicago quartet On Again Off Again just have that something about them. Having grown up quite a bit from its 2008 EP Cycles, On Again Off Again play quirky indie rock with just a hint of pop lingering in the background. The group’s 2010 effort (Re)cycles EP, sees the band move away from the subdued, folkier elements of the previous effort and brings some life and color back into their bodies. The end result is enough to get your foot tappin’ and head boppin’ along.
2. Portland rockers Blue Skies for Black Hearts have a name that suggests they were born in the midst of New Jersey’s emo/hardcore scene in 2001, but rest assured that is not the case. In fact, Blue Skies for Black Hearts have this sweet powerpop thing going on. And in fact, I’m getting a distinctly Sloan-esque brand of powerpop from these kids. Blue Skies for Black Hearts’ album Embracing The Modern Age has all the fun harmonies and soothing guitar solos and bouncy drum beats one would expect from the aforementioned Canadian quartet and more. Embrace it, fellows.
3. Chicago’s The Laureates are quickly becoming a LLP fave. The group plays the kind of jangly indie rock that everyone can enjoy. Brace yourself for a sound that incorporates Brit Pop vocals along with booming bass and drums and 60s-esque guitar melodies. Kicking off this packed bill are Chicago’s own Channel Four. The quartet’s deep, but rich vocals sung over sparkling indie rock with just a hint of folk comes off as an ode to The Lemonheads, and it’s good thing.
8:00 p.m. Thursday, 10/20. Beat Kitchen. 21+ $8.
