Three allow-me-to-tell-you-what-you-should-do-with-your-time reasons to do as I say and hippity hop on over to the Subterranean this very evening…

1. Sometimes trolling the internet for shows leads me to discover some pretty lovely local music that has somehow escaped my ears. Such is the case with Chicago’s Milk At Midnight. This stuff is right up my alley (Yes, I have other alleys than just metal ones). Sure, there’s a little old Flaming Lips – You know, when they were a rock band – but more than anything it’s just good old, driving indie rock. Welcome to my ears, Milk At Midnight.

2. Another local rock band, Tin Tin Can open tonight’s show. I grew up in the Bay Area in the late 80′s/early 90′s, and I don’t remember many local bands ever sounding like real bands. Here’s another Chicago band I’ve not heard before today, and damn if they don’t sound like another solid addition to our fair city’s music scene. There are many reasons I’m positive moving here was the smartest thing I’ve done in my life. The music is one of them there reasons.

3. Headliner, Stardeath and White Dwarfs hail from Oklahoma City (well, Norman to be exact). There’s another band that came from that city. I’ve been told I look like their singer. I don’t know. Yes, Stardeath have a big old Flaming Lips connection such as the singer being Wayne Coyne’s nephew. Adorable. There’s two ways to approach this: 1) This band gets a free ride on Wayne’s coattails. I mean, they’ve signed to Warner Brothers already. 2) This band will always be in the Lips shadow and will forever struggle to form their own identity. Both are probably true. Choose your own adventure with these guys, or just let your earballs decide.

Doors 8:30/Show 9:00 p.m. Thursday, 5/6. Subterranean. 17+. $10.
