Jukebox the Ghost
Three that’s-not-a-tear-in-my-beer reasons to head over to Schubas tonight…
1. Schubas has an excellent piano-driven, indie pop showcase on tap for tonight. Upbeat Philly poppers Jukebox The Ghost are headlining and you are really in for a treat. The trio create a nice mix of danceable new-wave pop gems like the track “Schizophrenia,” from Jukebox the Ghost’s latest album Everything under the Sun and sweet, slow-burners like the Ben Folds-esque track “Summer Sun.”
2. Our second piano-led band of the night is Brooklyn’s Wakey!Wakey! The group is ably led by its frontman Mike Grubbs (who you might have seen on the TV show “One Tree Hill”) who conducts an unruly orchestra, consists of whistlers, violins and a brass section. Some songs meander into Ben Folds-ish territory, but Wakey!Wakey! just reinforces the song’s existing accessible pop structures enough to transport the listener into one of those dramatic TV shows where someone is running in the rain to get away from all those heavy feelings.
3. Rounding out the show are Boston’s danceable indie-rockers Pretty & Nice. The quartet swapped its pianos for some sexy synths. When Pretty & Nice aren’t churning out its dirty, hip-shaking rhythms on songs like “Tora Tora Tora” and “Yonkers,” it’s going off into groovy Beatles-land with jangly flourishes of ooh’s and ahh’s. Out of sight.
