Jon Drake & The Shakes
1. At times, Jon Drake & The Shakes feel heavy-hearted while emitting sounds that are light and breezy. As if the tight, swinging rhythms weren’t enough, there’s the elegant string arrangements and woozy horns (“Margie“). Jon Drake & The Shakes’ less-is-more approach to melodic folk-pop is exceptionally endearing, and we can’t help but smile in approval.
2. A little bit Midwestern soul, a little bit downhome cooking, Musikanto blends regional styles to create some oddly fun pop numbers. A through-and-through Chicagoan, Musikanto (born Mike Musikanto) delivers melancholy, Spoon-esque piano suites (“Awful Mind”) or even Zydeco and surf-flavored head shakers (“Every Which Way“). But the most alluring thing about Musikanto is how his music glows with a summer time charm and a wrap-your-arm-around-a-loved-one-like warmth. By the way, feel free to download his new album, Sky of Dresses, on his website.
3. And, yeah, that’s that. Only a two-fer tonight, but what do you have to complain about? It’s free! Besides, it’s hot out. Wouldn’t you rather be inside sipping on a sweet but tangy Viking Funeral? Of course you would. Anyhow, speaking of Musikanto, here’s his new video for the delicate, “Blues For Momma.” Enjoy:
