GRANT HART
1. Because legendary ex-Hüsker Dü drummer Grant Hart will be performing solo material. Though Hart is probably best known for being a member of Hüsker Dü, he formed alt-rock trio Nova Mob after their 1987 break up. Nova Mob, unfortunately, only lasted until the late 1990′s, but Grant is still producing some quite exceptional solo material. His latest solo effort, Hot Wax, was released this past October and features the killer ’60s-garage cut “You’re the reflection of the Moon on the Water,” which can be heard on his Myspace page. And though he’s from Minnesota, lets gives him a warm Chicago reception tonight.
2. Because the Grant Hart isn’t the only solo act from band that has ceased to exist who is appearing at tonight’s show. Jared Grabb, formerly of Chicago in-your-face rockers Scouts Honor, is showing off his earnest side with his new solo material, which is a bit more subdued than the intensity of his old group. Instead of shouting and pedal-to-the-metal guitar riffs, Jared showcases his delicate yet poignant vocals over simple acoustic melodies. Additionally, Annie Saunders from the melodic Chicago punk group This Is My Fist will be making a solo appearance. It should be interesting to see how her Brody Armstrong-esque growl will hold up with out a gritty rhythm section.
3. Because there’s more! Opening the show is Chicago whiskey-rockers The Blind Staggers. So, I completely made up the genre of whiskey-rock, but honestly, isn’t this the kind of music you’d want to hear while sipping on some JD?
8:00 PM. Thursday, 1/21. Ronny’s. 21+. ? (We’re guessing between $6 -- $8).
