Deerhoof

And now three reasons to get out and see some snow while it’s still there and head on over to the Bottom Lounge tonight…

1. The mighty Deerhoof return to Chicago on the heels of their latest release, Deerhoof vs. Evil. New to Deerhoof? Well, this San Francisco quartet has been pushing the boundaries of pop music for years. Their last few albums have been spastic, guitar-heavy efforts, which focused on rocking you to your bones. But on their latest, the band pulls back a bit, and offers a more organic approach to their trademark art-pop and give us a record with dense layers and the occasional dance beat. Deerhoof still push out the rockers though, and lead singer and bassist Satomi Matsuzaki’s falsetto reaches heights other singers wouldn’t dare. But at the very least, go to see drummer Greg Saunier absolutely wreck it behind the kit.

2. Also on tonight’s bill is the United Kingdom’s Ben Butler & Mousepad, who seemingly fit right in with Deerhoof as they play frantic, manic progressive pop. Ben Butler & Mousepad’s music is filled with off-kilter synths, computerized blips and, sometimes, a driving drum beat. While the band might not melt your face, there is a good chance they’ll scramble your brain.

3. Finally, local boys D. Rider will open tonight, and they also air on the more experimental side. The band’s tunes seem to hinge on buffalo-sized drum beats which hold the music together, so that guitars, synths and whatever else can do their own art-rock stylings. At their most demented, D. Rider is actually quite hypnotic.
