Creepy Band
1. Creepy Band is an appropriate name as their dirge-y brand of rock ‘n’ roll has more in common with a funeral mass than a punk show. This Chicago outfit uses a whole lot of church organ to give their songs an extra eerie quality as if the ghostly vocal shouts weren’t, um, creepy enough. Sure, it’s January, but Creep Band go heavy on the Halloween. LISTEN: “Ray’s Riff”
2. A little more lively in their approach, Jon Drake and The Shakes focus on wooing via swinging rhythms and pop-fueled string and horn arrangements. The result is some very endearing indie-pop with a warm touch of alt-folk for good measure. Their latest single, “Charlie,” is an elegant, uptempo affair with some quirky organ antics. 3. Opening the show are two very talented guitar players, Johnathan Young and Ryley Walker. Young impresses with his fingerpicked, instrumental take on guitar blues. And local imprint Plustapes released a cassette from Walker last October, which offers subdued and mood-shifting acoustic arrangements.
