Caddywhompus

Three I-caught-a-fish-this-big-no-seriously-I’m-not-holding-my-fingers-that-far-apart reasons to shine up the buckles on your new shoes and once again roll on over to Ronny’s tonight…

1. Houston’s/New Orlean’s two-piece Caddywhompus not only employ one of my high school English teacher’s favorite Dickens era words but they also, more importantly, rock. I know folks that frown on the two-piece for needing more pieces. I’m not one of them. As a fan of drumming I’m usually drawn to a guitar/drum or, as is the case with Om, bass/drum combos because without more members the drums need to be extra special to keep things moving. See: The Spinanes. Caddywhompus uphold this tradition nicely. Also, the write sweet upbeat indie pop gems so there’s that as well.

2. Hey, look, it’s site favorites Bird Talk. Last we spoke, Bird Talk were hard at work on a new EP, and, although I’ve no new information on the process, you can rest assured that new material will be played out loud. If you think you’ve heard Bird Talk, think again. The two new songs they released awhile back sound nothing like each other or like anything they’ve done before. Here’s where a cornier writer would make a Bird Talk are spreading their wings type analogy. I would, too. Or maybe I’d say they are rapidly moving up the pecking order of Chicago’s indie rock scene. Maybe I just did.

3. Chicago’s Tender just want to play early 80′s style punk rock for you, the kind the Buzzcocks or Vibrators once played (and shockingly still are). Add in a touch of Television style guitar antics and you are onto something. Tenders certainly are. Sometimes the grooves to your old records get worn out and you need something new and old at the same time. May I present the Tenders. Feel free to pogo the night away.

8:00 p.m. Thursday, 7/1. Ronny’s. 21+. $5.
