At the 1:44 mark in their song "Dr. Ice,"
Bike Cops do something I was not expecting. From the tune's jangly guitars and good-time tempo rises a dank and gritty guitar solo that could easily fit on a song from a heavier band. Yet Bike Cops aren't really all that heavy, which is why I think it's enjoyable. They're another local outfit that go for the whole "less is more" garagey/surf rock approach. Hey, I mean as long as it sounds fun, right?. But they interject some interesting mayhem into their songs, which works quite well. Take the aforementioned solo on "Dr. Ice" for example, or the rumbling, rollicking and nearly stumbling mid-section of "Whiskey Drinker," both featured on their latest release,
Piehl Sessions Vol. 1. They manage to bend the familiar just so that it keeps the listener's attention. And that in itself is a win.
