Archie Powell & The Exports
Three I-know-it’s-only-rock’n’roll-but-I-like-it-but-please-don’t-sue-me-Mick-Jagger reasons to head up to Beat Kitchen tonight…
1. Cheerful pop rockers Archie Powell & The Exports are hometown boys. Midwesterners through and through. Nowhere is this more evident than on the group’s 2010 album Skip Work, which is full of slick, high-powered pop rock. Singer Archie Powell yelps and howls with a tinge of Northern drawl. If you squint hard enough it could be possible to mistake Powell for a young Elvis Costello.
2. Fellow Chicagoans Buckman Page create some old time foot tapping, fun with their folky mix of pop rock. There’s nothing quite like catchy guitar solos backed by acoustic guitar and harmonica. Song “Cait in Spain” from the group’s album I’ll Paint Myself Again is a serious pop gem with a chorus that will stay in your head for days.
3. It’s pretty clear by this point that whoever booked this showcase has an excellent ear for placing like-minded bands together. Wisconsin pop rockers Ian Olvera & The Sleepwalkers kick off the night with some bluesy, jangly rock rhythms that CCR or Bruce Springsteen would surely be proud of. Chicago cover band The Bishop is dusting off its original alternative rock material for this Beat Kitchen show.
8:00 p.m. Thursday, 6/9. Beat Kitchen. 21+ $8.
