Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody
1. Formerly of influential English alt-rock outfit Swervedriver, Adam Franklin hits Chicago’s Subterranean tonight with his new band, Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody. The group is a bit is a departure from Swervedriver as Franklin now goes for a sounds that’s significantly warmer. The guitars are crisp instead of blazing (“Yesterday Has Gone Forever”), and the songs are have a laid back vibe even in their moodier moments (“I’ll Be Yr Mechanic”).
2. Chicago’s Castor and Pollux goes for the grandeur with an experimental, progressive pop sound that puts emphasis on engaging melodies. The piano-driven slow burn of “Wretched Storms” is quite soundtrack-esque as it reaches a might crescendo, and they also manage to get edgy during the dueling space guitars and tension-filled duet of “Inconstant Moon.”
3. Remaindermen also go for a thick, expansive sounds. Combining elements of catchy indie rock and orchestral pop, these locals not only sound sun-bright but feel that way too with songs that build into horn-driven grooves and twinkling keyboard passages.
8:00 p.m. Monday, 10/3. Subterranean. 21+. $12.
