The Chicago Tribune reported earlier this week that the 32nd annual Chicago Jazz Festival, which kicks off on August 31 and runs through September 5, will get quite a makeover due to city budget cuts.
The Grant Park portions of the Chicago Jazz Festival will be trimmed to two days, September 4 and 5, but the event planners have turned this potential setback into a major positive by setting up a week of jazz festivities at Millennium Park, the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies and the Chicago Cultural Center.
The festival will kick off on August 31 with “A Pride of Trumpets: Celebrating Chicago’s Jazz Trumpet Legacy”, a Jazz Institute of Chicago gala that features top jazz trumpeters led by Chicago Jazz Ensemble artistic director Jon Faddis. The gala will take place at the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, and tickets are $125-$200. Get more infomation at Jazzinchicago.org.
On September 1, the 2010 Jazz Club Tour will run from 6 p.m. until midnight in which the Chicago Trolley Company will take jazz hounds to some of the city’s top jazz venues. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event, and you can get additional information at Jazzinchicago.org.
Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion will play host to “Big Band Birthday Bash: Ahmad Jamal’s 80th with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra” on September 2. The free concert kicks off at 7:30 p.m. More information at Millenniumpark.org.
September 3 offers jazz programming at the Chicago Cultural Center from noon until 3 p.m., and then more performances from not-yet-announced headliners are planned at the Pritzker Pavilion from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Log onto Millenniumpark.org for more information.
Finally, September 4 and 5 are the big performances at Grant Park. The free music will kick off at 11 a.m. and run until 9:00 p.m. This year’s headliners include Brad Mehldau, Kurt Elling, the Either/Orchestra, Rene Marie, Brian Blade and Chicagoan Henry Threadgill.
