Hey, you like Andrew Bird, right? Of course you do. Dude’s way talented and can whistle like nobody’s business. And you probably missed him at Schuba’s a couple months back, because, you know, it holds like 200 people.
Well, if you were worried that your chance to see Mr. Bird in a small, intimate setting had passed forever, I have some great news for you. Not only is Bird coming back home to Chicago in December to play another small venue, he’s coming for three straight nights. And it’s in a church. You don’t want to miss this.
The shows are part of a small series Bird is calling “Gezelligheid,” which is Dutch for “coziness,” almost, but not quite. From Bird’s press release on the whole matter, he sheds some more light on the issue:
“What I hope to do with these shows is adapt my music completely to the atmosphere of the space and the season. I’m inspired to do this based on childhood memories of performing Handel’s Messiah in various churches on an annual basis. The music will be mostly original instrumentals using my voice only to intone. I want the audience to be both lifted and comforted as we head into another cold and dark winter. I feel the space should be sacred so the audience can experience my music in a different atmosphere.”
He will be playing alone, and instead of using a PA, will amplify himself through his signature horn (you know the one). Oh, and ambient light sources will take over for conventional show lighting. I’m thinking you can’t miss this.
The shows are December 15-17 at the Fourth Presbyterian Church. The pre-sale has come and gone, but the general sale starts November 7, at TicketMaster, and the Vic Theatre box office. They go from $35-$40.

That Schubas show was my first time seeing Bird live, definitely not missing this.
Bird has also added a FOURTH night to this extravaganza. December 14, a Monday. Tickets available through the outlets noted above. I can’t wait for this. I’ve never seen Bird live, and I think this is the perfect way to do so.
