Normally, I would be wary of any band describing themselves in terms such as “New Age” and “Goth,” but Chicago trio Pillars & Tongues both fit that description and make it work.
Singer Mark Trecka entrances with his deep chanting vocals on new single “The Making Graceful” from Pillars & Tongues upcoming third album The Pass and Crossings. The song sustains a simple tribal drum beat, so simple even I can find the beat and mimic it, and combines it with droning violins and the aforementioned low vocals layered on top.
“The Making Graceful” channels Dead Can Dance’s hypnotic, almost sermon-like pop song structure. It draws you in and doesn’t let go until the end.
Pillars & Tongues new album The Pass and Crossings officially releases on June 28, but you can see the Chicago trio play a free show at the Empty Bottle on Monday, May 30.
