How do you know spring is right around the corner? Well, Pitchfork tickets are on sale. But even more telling are the Record Store Day releases trickling out.
Locally, word has come down that In Tall Buildings are set to release a brand new 7″, titled Warm Rock, in time for the occasion on April 16.
The A-side is a cover of “Warm Rock” by fellow Chicagoans Cains And Abels and the B-side is what the press release calls a “bedroom-pop” version of “The Way To A Monster’s Lair” from its self-titled debut.
And, you can hear the A-side right here, right now. The In Tall Buildings version is a rather beefy, Neil Young-esque take on Cains and Abels more fragile acoustic original. In Tall Buildings’ Erik Hall has slowed things down a bit and added crunchy guitars, although seemingly out of character, gives the song a heft that the original forgoes. Rather than give us a softer, singer songwriter take this time around we get to hear him flex his muscles a bit and sing in a more strained and urgent manner. Listen to it after the jump.
Known for his meticulous and maybe, slow recording process, Hall has apparently thrown these two songs together with a quickness that is in line with the vibe of most Record Store Day releases. Fear not, fans, for Hall is also slowly and methodically working on the full length follow up to his self-titled debut.
There will also be plenty of opportunities to check out In Tall Buildings live next month. First, at Lincoln Hall on Saturday, April 9th, followed by an in-store at Saki on April 16. In Tall Buildings will also perform as part of Second City’s The Late Live Show at Piper’s Alley.
