As the trio Russian Circles took the stage last Friday, August 14, at the Metro, they showed no signs of being in a major auto wreck merely weeks earlier. Instead with little to no crowd interaction, they focused all their energy on the instrumental metal journeys they specialize in. This was no joyful and warm homecoming party, but rather a testament to the band’s passion and drive as working musicians.

It would be an odd set-up for any band in a narrow back doorway between two massive shelves filled with old video cassettes and rock n’ roll magazines. But all four members of Radar Eyes managed to squeeze in the very back of Laurie’s Planet Of Sound, instruments and all. The band was running a few minutes behind the advertised start time of 8 p.m., so before they played a single note or had time for a sound check, guitarist Nathan Luecking told the small yet enthused audience of about 30 to simply yell out if the sound was poor. But after ripping into their first song, sound difficulties were the last thing on the crowd’s minds as Radar Eyes played with a fiery passion that truly captivated everyone in the quaint Lincoln Square record shop.

Chicago rock staple Local H wrapped up its “Six Angry Records” tour with an electrifying home town show at the Metro on Sunday, May 23.

Before the festivities began, singer Scott Lucas emerged on stage, dressed in a faded black t-shirt with multiple holes and brown corduroy pants, holding a black cowboy hat containing slips with the names of all six full-length Local H albums.
