Mako Sica

Three we-set-our-clocks-ahead-and-I-cut-off-my-hair-so-here-comes-the-sun reasons to mix it up a bit and hit up the Hungry Brain tonight…

1. All the links to my past praise – be it live or in album review form – for Mako Sica are vast and frankly too time consuming for me to organize for you. Trust me, loyal followers, I’ve lavished much praise on them. And I’m about to do it again. Experimental music can sometimes be more of an intellectual pursuit than one of actual enjoyment. Sure, Mako Sica’s haunting Southwesterly drones might make you go “hmmm” but you’ll also find yourself engulfed in the musical landscapes they present. The experience is that much more intense live.

In Tall Buildings | photo by Elise Bergman

How do you know spring is right around the corner? Well, Pitchfork tickets are on sale. But even more telling are the Record Store Day releases trickling out.

Locally, word has come down that In Tall Buildings are set to release a brand new 7″, titled Warm Rock, in time for the occasion on April 16.

The A-side is a cover of “Warm Rock” by fellow Chicagoans Cains And Abels and the B-side is what the press release calls a “bedroom-pop” version of “The Way To A Monster’s Lair” from its self-titled debut.

And, you can hear the A-side right here, right now. The In Tall Buildings version is a rather beefy, Neil Young-esque take on Cains and Abels more fragile acoustic original. In Tall Buildings’ Erik Hall has slowed things down a bit and added crunchy guitars, although seemingly out of character, gives the song a heft that the original forgoes. Rather than give us a softer, singer songwriter take this time around we get to hear him flex his muscles a bit and sing in a more strained and urgent manner. Listen to it after the jump.

Harps of Tartarus

Three is-it-Thursday-already-it-feels-like-this-week-is-magically-skipping-days-entirely reasons to comb that goatee and head over to Pancho’s tonight…

1. Fleshbroker have a fucking metal ass name, right? The thing is, they don’t peddle in the ugliness that the name suggests. Somewhere a grindcore band is pissed that they had to change their name to Fleshdealer or Fleshwholesaler. That said, Fleshbroker do metal it up but theirs is a bit of a progressive mix. Vocal-less tunes mingle in odd time signatures infused with some classic metal riffage. I’m guessing these guys love Primus.

Three spring-winter-spring-winter-it-must-be-March reasons to dress warm or maybe not but bring an umbrella or that might be silly but no matter what hit up the Empty Bottle tonight…

1. As reported by our crack reporting-like team, the Bottle is unleashing a new series of monthly free concerts under the name “Music. Friendly. Dancing”. See, it’s for you the customers. The Bottle appreciates you, and, despite their many already free Monday night shows, the good folks there thought they’d up the ante as a way of saying thanks. How so? Welp, look at the first installment’s headliner…

At one point, I referred to Chicago’s Village as a less robotic Spoon fed a diet of the Jam. If that were the case then, it’s surely is not the case on Local Moves. Yes, there’s still a jangle to the guitars and a bit of detached cool, but for the most part, it conjures up a more straight forward Television more than anything else. Indie rock used to be all about that 70′s New York art rock scene, and it is that era that seems to permeate Local Moves.

Chicago’s, yes I’m still going to call them emo, Coping are back with something new hot on the heels of their debut cassette Lawndale which we recently reviewed.

A split 7″ with The Clippers shall be coming out on Topshelf Records quite soonm and we here are lucky enough to be able to present to you one of the two new Coping songs on it.

“F For Now” has all the trademark Coping sounds front and center. Chiming guitars, hey-listen-to-me vocals and tweaky breakdowns all work together and this time around you get a sample of someone speaking as well. It all adds up to another well done slice of the Coping pie. Listen to “F For Now” below:

Catch the fellas on Friday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m. at Spider Skull Island with Angel Eyes, Regrets, CSTVT and Like Rats. For the address contact Coping through their Bandcamp. Don’t ask questions, you.

Project Film | Photo by Michael Kaluzny

Three it-seems-to-go-from-sunny-to-overcast-in-the-matter-of-seconds reasons to get out, just get out already, and head to Schubas tonight…

1. It seems like months since I reviewed Project Film’s debut, Chicago. It’s time for a refresher. You can go read up, but I suppose I can paraphrase myself. Project Film make twee indie pop the way it used to be made. It’s intimate, a bit sad, but ultimately poppy enough to be memorable. It’s good stuff, folks.
