Three holy-crap-baseball-was-played-yesterday reasons to soak that up for a second and then head over to Panchos tonight…

1. That’s right, I said Panchos. realize I usually send you to the Bottle on Mondays, but on your toes is where I aim to keep you. The Nesmins seem to straddle the line between old school punk and that kind of short lived when-metal-met-punk-and-developed-a-childish-sense-of-humor thing. Some of the riffs are a bit fatter than your run of the mill punk, but the bass lines scream all those seven inches I bought at the Gilman Street merch table. Remembering is nice.

Color Card

Three wait-it’s-Tuesday-you-say-but-if-that’s-the-case-shouldn’t-I-be-at-work reasons to hop, skip, and let’s say jump over to the Subterranean tonight…

1. It’s Chicago’s Color Card. You like the sound of voices? Well, then Color Card might be your cup of tea. Besides some intimate low key indie rock these guys seem to pay much attention to vocals, like harmonizing and everything. It adds up to a pretty lush yet not overstuffed sound that I’m pretty sure you’ll dig. Psst. Their EP is available for whatever price you desire at their Bandcamp page.

Debut albums are exciting, right?

Chicago’s The Bright White are about to excite you with theirs, Until Then, quite soon.

In the meantime, check out the first, we’ll call it single, “Red Summer Rose,” which is a song that kind of perfectly mashes up their influences. Add a dash of power pop a-la solo McCartney, some Brit pop, and more than a heaping helping of Buffalo Tom style Americana indie rock and you get “Red Summer Rose.” Someone had to finally merge these influences. Listen at the left.

You can thank the Bright White personally on Thursday, February 24, when they play their record release show at the Double Door. If you can’t wait till then to hear the whole thing swing on by Reckless Records for a physical copy or CDBaby.com for the record in digital format.

The Forms

Three sometimes-Mondays-feel-an-awful-lot-like-Sundays reasons to take a walk down to the Empty Bottle tonight…

1. I’m going to make it easy on you. Not easy easy but I won’t be sending you off to get your face melted or mind blown. Tonight, let New York’s The Forms give you a taste of the well orchestrated singer songwriter fare. Sometimes you just want a song to feel good. The Forms deliver time and time again. They also have a song called “Black Metal” so I don’t feel like I’ve strayed too far from my comfort zone.

If you were recently thinking, “Boy, I’d love to watch a pretty girl pose for roughly three minutes with waves crashing behind her!” but were embarrassed to admit it, let local surf-rockers Merlin Wall ease your shame. Their new video is for the bouncy love song, “Chick Track,” off their debut Crushin’ From Afar, and it just might peak your interest. Watching this without sound might make you look, at best, like a bit of a desperate loner. But with sound, you are just watching a swell new video by one of Chicago’s up and coming young bands. So, thank you Merlin Wall, and keep up the good work:

POWERS

Three three-reasons-are-great-but-an-added-extra-special-fourth-reason-tucked-away-is-even-better reasons to head on over to the Abbey Pub this night of nights…

1. Dudes, it’s Powers. Like, does anyone in the Chicago-land area hit any harder than these guys? It all seems so simple, the guitars, bass, and drums. And it doesn’t sound necessarily heavy but there’s something in Powers DNA that just makes everything they do more rocking than seems possible. If you can, think Chavez, and you’ll hear a kinship.

Three pitchers-and-catchers-report-today-and-not-a-day-too-soon-I-say reasons to dig out your mitt and look at it lovingly before heading to the Hideout tonight…

1. It’s been long overdue so let’s highlight the Hideout’s amazing Soup and Bread. You maybe know the drill but I will refresh your memories. The Hideout gets their staff and some local artists, musicians, and real life chefs to cook up some piping hot soup which is then served to you, the eating public. Bread is obviously offered as well as occasional muffins and cookies. You’re sold already I can tell.
