And now three reasons to get your punk on at Township tonight…
1. Chicago’s Bully In The Hallway impressed us with their latest release Crooks and their Castles as it’s a smartly constructed blend of hardcore punk and melodic alt-rock. At times the record rushed along with a Fugazi-esque sense of urgency, while at others, the band unleashes melodic but powerful flourishes that are nearly arena-rock ready. LISTEN: “Life is Money”
2.All Eyes West have a similar taste punky antics. These locals indulgence in frenetic, guitar-lead jams that are lead by gritty vocals and big climaxes. Yet they keep things in the melodic end of the spectrum, which gives their tunes an FM Radio-ready accessibility. LISTEN: “Preach to rejects”
There’s probably many comparisons that can be made about Chicago quintet Gorilla Press, but Audiotree probably has the best one yet: “Pink Flody meets Nine Inch Nails.” The group’s set starts out light and brooding, but after a comical interview section in which the band offers up their favorite wrestlers, Gorilla Press ramp up the fury. So put your co-workers in a headlock* and clear 40 minutes from your schedule while these cats let those solos and fills fly. *Note: don’t actually put anyone in a headlock.
Three reasons to celebrate the President’s Day in style at the Empty Bottle tonight…
1. Brooklyn’s Royal Baths inject a bit of the metallic blues into Velvet Underground-esque art rock resulting in a sound that’s as hip as it is dark. But I’m not just talking about the tinny reverb engulfing their guitars, but lead singer Jeremy Cox’s deadpan vocal delivery that nears Thurston Moore territory. LISTEN: “Darling Divine”
Disturbing? Surreal? I’m still not quite sure. But on last night’s episode of MTV’s Jersey Shore, the White Mystery song “Party” soundtracked a crucial, tension-filled moment. Well…as tension filled as a show about a group of partying North Jersey Italians can get. Here’s a bit of context (that I, uh, heard from my friend. Yeah.): Snooki and Deena made a cake for their boss since a week earlier that left work early to get drunk. In the morning, the cake was missing a small piece. Everyone assumes it was The Situation and accusations fly. It was this moment that the very beginning of “Party” is audible. Anyway, I won’t spil the ending, but watch the very short clip below (the song starts immediately):
We’ve been anxiously awaiting music from E+, a new project featuring members of Disappears, Heavy Times and Verma, and finally today our anxiety has been quenched.
Last week the band announced on their Facebook that they’ve completed work on a new EP, which was recorded by The Ponys/Bare Mutauts/Football member Jered Gummere. And today, the band unleashed the first song from those recording sessions, “Too Many Voices.”
“Too Many Vices” is a well crafted exercise in neo-psychedelia. The song rolls along Luca Cimarusti’s (Heavy Times) skin tight rhythm as bursts of new wave synths and cathartic guitar are littered throughout. Together with Damon J. Carruesco’s (Disappears) spacey vocals, “Too Many Vices” recalls something that would satisfy fans of both Joy Division’s dark post-punk and MGMT’s more atmospheric material. Listen to the track after the jump.
Well, wouldn’t you know it, not even a week later, but the record’s first single was first premiered on RollingStone.com.
As I earlier speculated, this first bit of new Maps & Atlases material continues with the very melodic approach Maps & Atlases showacased on their 2010 record, Perch Patchwork.
“Winter” is a pleasant uptempo number that glides along some peppy guitar play and a bubbling rhythm. It’s quite airy, so much so that the song sounds in danger of floating away if it weren’t anchored by singer Dave Davison’s smokey croon. Listen to “Winter” below:
The band are heading to Europe in April, and there are no North American dates scheduled as of now. But logic says we should expect Maps & Atlases to roll through their hometown sometime this summer.
And now three reasons to spend you Valentine’s Day (whether with +1 or solo) at The Empty Bottle…
1. There might not be a better local band to spend your Valentine’s Day with than Tyler Jon Tyler. Their uber-melodic approach to minimal garage pop is equally a perfect soundtrack to snuggle up to your significant other with as it is rambunctious enough for you to jump around to because, “Fuck Valentine’s Day!” And unlike a box of Chocolates, you know what you’re going to get with Tyler Jon Tyler – boogie down rhythms, fiery guitar antics and Rebecca Valeriano-Flores’s commanding delivery. LISTEN: “Tick Tock Tick”
