Waterstreet

Students at the altar of rock lie in wait for when they can prove themselves worthy. The members of Waterstreet — vocalist Evan Hand, guitarist Joe Shadid, bassist Mike Crusen and drummer Rob Gould — have been waiting a long time. Formed five years ago in Peoria, the band now based in Chicago, summon the classic rock Gods on its latest EP Of Gossip.

The Maybenauts

“Take Five” is a new interview series that will focus on Chicago’s ever-growing music scene by giving you insight on the city’s best local acts via the best source possible: the acts themselves. We ask five questions, and they give five answers. Here is the second installment featuring The Maybenauts.

Chicago glam rockers The Maybenauts have only been around 21 months, but from the look of their stage presence and sound of well-crafted pop songs on their debut EP, you would never know this to be true. Singer Leilani Frey, bassist Ellie Maybe, guitarist Vee Sonnets and drummer Emily Agustin write well, look well and rock well together. We recently chatted up Maybenauts bassist Ellie Maybe about the band’s foray into making music videos and their involvement with the Jane Wiedlin-approved charity Bowling for Boobies.

I didn’t think it was possible for glam pop quartet The Maybenauts to get any cuter than they already are, but higher levels of adorableness were achieved on the set of the band’s new video for “Not Aware” off their Big Bang EP. The “Not Aware” video was shot at Late Bar in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood. Dressed in their finest sparkly duds, the group tangles with an evil panda who forces them to make a few lineup changes. Hilarity ensues. You can catch the Maybenauts for free when they perform at the Double Door on Tuesday, September 14. Before then, however, enjoy the vid:

Chicago’s R&B rockers the Velcro Lewis Group are the band that the Eagles of Death Metal should aspire to be. While EoDM makes its rootsy, boogie rock about oozing sex and booty shaking, The Velcro Lewis Group is way more subtle and soulful. Before you know it the songs on White Magick Summer have the listener on his/her feet as singer Andy Slater (aka Velcro Lewis) delivers his sermon.
